Trouble about quarry plans: Neustadt in Saxony in the civil protest!
In the city of Neustadt in Saxony, the plans for controversial quarry sales are again in focus. The sale of a path in Oberottendorf to the quarry operator Prostein GmbH ensures considerable resentment and protest in the city council. According to a report by Sächsische.de The proposal, which was not discussed in the working group founded, was sharply criticized by City Councilor Torsten Schlegel (NFN). Schlegel applied for the removal of the decision on the agenda, which was finally approved. However, the sale of the turning loop for the quarry remained on the agenda and was approved with the aim of making two local projects benefit.
Already in advance, on May 27, 2024, an information event on the expansion plans of the quarry took place, in which around 40 residents expressed their concerns. The main focus was on the health and environmental risks that could bring the construction of the quarry. There were numerous citizens present, the topics such as the water situation, the dust pollution and possible damage to the building structure based on stone blasting, such as the Neustadt Sachsen reported.
The concerns of the citizens
In the residents' meeting, the concerns of the citizens were loud. Prostein GmbH has set up a measuring point at the church in Oberottendorf in response to monitor the shocks. The records of this measuring point can be viewed online, which should offer residents more transparency. In addition, citizens submitted a petition with around 500 signatures against the expansion plans, which was handed over to the mayor on May 15, 2024.
As part of the discussion about urban development, it should not be forgotten that sustainable urban planning is a central topic. According to the Federal Environment Agency aims to live on life worth living. These should reconcile social, economic and environmental requirements, whereby the needs of citizens should also play a central role.
Who knows, maybe it is the local pressure and the commitment of the citizens that could boost the dialogue between the city administration and residents. The challenge of finding a balance between economic interests and the well -being of citizens remains a necessary task in Neustadt. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what measures are ultimately taken to take the concerns of the residents seriously and find sustainable solutions.
