Current news from Saxon Switzerland: weather, fires and more!
In the last few days, the situation in Gohrischheide, a heavily wooded area on the Saxon-Brandenburg border, has become dramatically worse. A forest fire that has been spreading since July 2nd has already affected over 2,100 hectares, which is more than is usually burned in a year in Germany. Ralf Hänsel, district administrator of the Meißen district, emphasized that the fire department wants to let the fire burn down in a controlled manner in order to avoid a battle of materials, while the Dresden fire department is supporting the fire with various emergency services and fire engines recruited from several parts of the city. The night's indulgence was calm, with no significant changes, which represented a small glimmer of hope.
This difficult situation is undoubtedly reminiscent of the devastating fires in 2022, when large areas of forest burned in Saxony. At that time, 215 registered fires affected a total of 782 hectares of forest, with one major fire in Gohrischheide alone being responsible for 550 hectares. In the summer of 2023, local news reports, there was a brief decline in wildfires, with only 120 acres affected in three months. But current developments show that the risk of fire in the forests is still high.
Fire brigade and emergency services in constant operation
Around 665 emergency services from the volunteer fire department, technical relief organization, Bundeswehr and police are currently working to control the flames. They work in a shift system with twelve-hour shifts, using vehicle types such as tank fire engines and modern fire-fighting technology such as unmanned fire-fighting robots. The use of a Bundeswehr fire-fighting helicopter to support the situation from the air is particularly impressive.
The challenges for the fire department are enormous. Matthias Binner, deputy state chairman of the Free Voters of Saxony, criticizes the cuts in the state budget for the fire department and emphasizes how crucial a well-established public service is for the safety of the population. Ultimately, the emergency services must be optimally equipped to be prepared against the devastating effects of forest fires.
Weather and causes of fire
The weather forecast for today, July 7, 2025, remains tense for the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district. The district has provided daily updates on police, health and economic news, as well as weather conditions. A regional news bot ensures that citizens stay informed about current developments and are up to date.
In view of the high fire areas, the forest area in Saxony is developing both as a temporary danger zone and as an issue of social relevance. While the forest fires have become more and more urgent in recent years, it remains to be seen how politicians and society will continue to engage on this construction site.
