Mountain rescue service in action: hiking couple from North Rhine-Westphalia rescued in the Wilde Hölle!

A trip to picturesque Saxon Switzerland can quickly become an adventure. This is what happened to a pair of hikers from North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt who lost their orientation in wet pools and steep rock faces in the Wilde Hölle last Friday evening. They made an emergency call at 7:30 p.m. after trying in vain to find their route using Google Maps. The couple started at Beuthenfall at 4 p.m. with the aim of getting to Carolafelsen after a tour through the Schrammsteine. Since they didn't want to repeat the return trip, they looked for adventure and ended up in distress.

The mountain rescue service immediately mobilized rescue workers, who quickly found the exhausted couple. The Wild Hell, a steep and sometimes difficult part of the national park, always causes difficulties Sächsische.de reports. This mission shows once again how important it is to prepare well before a hike.

Increasing number of accidents in the mountains

The incident is no exception: in recent weeks, the mountain rescue service has recorded a worrying increase in climbing and hiking accidents. According to Tag24, the mountain rescue service had already been deployed on 591 missions in the first half of 2025, 83 of which were in Saxon Switzerland. Climbing accidents in particular endanger safety and present rescuers with major challenges.

A fatal climbing accident that occurred on Saturday near the health resort of Rathen was particularly tragic. A 64-year-old climber fell 15 meters due to failing slings. Despite immediate rescue measures by the Dresden mountain rescue service and the arrival of an emergency doctor by helicopter, the climber's life could not be saved, as DRK Sebnitz reports. Also on Sunday, two female climbers suffered injuries due to accidents and were treated in hospital.

Challenges for mountain rescuers

The number of operations is alarming - compared to previous years, there is an above-average number of incidents. DRK spokesman Kai Kranich emphasizes that many climbers overestimate their abilities, especially when they move from bouldering halls to the mountains. He recommends better preparation for the dangerous sport in order to avoid tragic accidents.

October in particular is considered to be the busiest month for the mountain rescue service. According to an evaluation, around two thirds of the deployments could be avoided if visitors acted more carefully. A little more sensitivity and respect for nature could prevent many accidents.

The mountain rescue service itself can look back on a committed group of 386 volunteer members in Saxony. They are not only active during the peak tourist season, but are also available in winter when skiers and sledders need help. Therefore, cooperation with other emergency services, as in various exercises in the region, is of great importance.

With this in mind, a trip into nature is always a wonderful experience, but safety should always be at the top of the list. Autumn not only shows off its best side, but also teaches us to approach our adventures responsibly.
