Freital: School construction in Pesterwitz delayed due to new fire station!

There are currently big plans in Pesterwitz to upgrade the school location, but they have stalled due to unexpected challenges. The city of Freital has been eyeing the expansion of the school and daycare campus in the town for years, but implementation has been delayed. The extension to the existing primary school and the construction of a new kindergarten were originally scheduled to start in 2023, but have now been postponed to 2024. The reason: lack of funding, like Sächsische.de reported.

In detail, 8.7 million euros are on the list of planned investments for the school extension and a further 5.8 million euros for the new daycare center. However, the focus has initially been shifted to the construction of a new fire station, which will tie up funds of around 20.7 million euros. Of this, 2.7 million euros will flow into the new fire department as funding from the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district. Mayor Uwe Rumberg has confirmed that a new funding application for the school and daycare project will be submitted next year in order to secure the urgently needed funds.

The school and daycare campus in Pesterwitz

The Freital city council passed a fundamental resolution for a modern school and daycare location in Pesterwitz on April 12, 2022. These plans include the development of an entire campus that includes both the elementary school and kindergarten. One of the core measures is an extension for the primary school, as the existing rooms no longer meet the requirements. Several structural changes are to be made here in order to improve the use of space and avoid the double occupancy of school and after-school rooms, such as THE CONSERVATIVE CENTER reported.

In addition, the existing daycare center must be relocated because the container kindergarten is to be replaced by a new building. This measure is necessary to meet the increased demands and to ensure that the children are cared for in modern facilities. The renovation of the existing primary school building is also on the agenda in order to meet modern standards and improve the structural integrity.

Financial challenges and outlook

However, the financial situation is tense. In addition to the funding problems already mentioned, there are concerns in the city council about the additional 300,000 euros that are needed to appoint a project controller. These costs could increase the total cost of the construction site to over 21 million euros. However, construction mayor Josephine Schattanek has assured that double awarding of work should be avoided in order to reduce additional costs in the project.

In the educational infrastructure scene, developments are not just limited to Pesterwitz. Throughout Saxony, as throughout Germany, there has been increased investment in school construction and renovation in recent years. The Education Server emphasizes that school authorities in Germany are increasingly taking responsibility for new buildings and maintenance. The planned steps in Pesterwitz are an expression of the need to modernize the infrastructure in the educational sector and adapt it to the needs of the future.

The coming months will be crucial in setting the course for the successful implementation of the construction projects in Pesterwitz. The city administration wants to join forces to ensure that the plans can finally be implemented and that the children learn and are cared for in modern and supportive rooms.
