Heidenauer Lugturm becomes an art object: Unveiling on August 16!

Heidenau, Deutschland - What's new from the lugturm in Heidenau? After more than four years of swing, the historical lookout tower shines again in new splendor. As the Saxon Reported, the scaffolding has now been dismantled, and the tower will be covered with an orange -colored fabric until the planned unveiling on August 16, on the occasion of its 145th birthday, which is reminiscent of Christo's famous art.

Jens Genschmar and his wife, the tenants of the Lugturm site in the Gommern district since 2017, have received the support of Dynamo Dresden fans to match the covering. This fabric was originally used for a choreography and gives the tower a special art character. The lugturm itself remains a construction site: in addition to the artistic shell, work on lightning protection, the railing and the power connection is also necessary.

The renovation progress

Since April 4, 2025, the lugturm has again been wearing its "crown". This represents significant progress in the lengthy renovation project, which was started in 2017. The work included the installation of new parapet stones and cover plates made by talented stonemasons and roofers. The freight forwarder Burckhardt was also involved in the crane work, which helped the heavy materials in their place. The lookout tower, which is on the striking 210 meter high Lugberg, is not only a popular destination for day trippers, but also has a long history. The construction started in May 1880 and was inaugurated in August of the same year. Since then, the lugurm has experienced many ups and downs, including a closure in 1938 due to dilapidation and a long decay. But the initiative for the construction, which started from the Niedersedlitz section of the mountain association, finally received new impetus through the current renovation work.

A look into the future

The next steps hope that the lugturm can soon be used fully as a viewpoint. An important goal of the renovation is to not only make the tower accessible to visitors, but also to enjoy the view of the Dresden Elbe valley and Saxon Switzerland. By October 2025, additional construction work is planned on the sewage pipe that started on July 7, 2025.

In the meantime, the lugturm is again used as an art object and excursion destination. The covering of the tower will be visible for at least five weeks, which is a unique opportunity for those interested in art and hiking friends to experience the tower in this special form after it has been closed since 2021.
