Fairy tale festival at Königstein Fortress: Slavic magic for young and old!
A special highlight awaits visitors to Königstein Fortress on July 27, 2025, when the fairy tale festival is celebrated under the motto “Once upon a time…”. This event is already celebrating its tenth anniversary and attracts not only little fairy tale lovers, but also big ones. From 10:30 a.m., guests can look forward to a diverse program that includes readings, drama and music and delves deeply into the fascinating world of Slavic culture. Entry is included in the regular fortress admission, so you can concentrate entirely on the magical performances while enjoying the impressive backdrop 240 meters above the Elbe valley.
The performances of the showcase theater “Pappschattira” directed by Christiane Guhr are particularly exciting. The illustrator Anne Ibelings will work with her to build a nostalgic miniature stage and tell stories using cardboard, light and shadow. The well-known Bautzen songwriters “Leichtfuß und Liederliesel” will also be there with a musical puppet show that brings characters from Sorbian mythology to life, including the Midday Lady, Lutki and the lucky dragon Plon. Two performances of the children's musical “Fischer's Franzi and the Secret of the Old Lupe” and the play “The Legendary Treasure of the Coal Dragon” are also on the program.
Creative participatory activities
The fairy tale festival not only offers ready-made performances, but also numerous hands-on activities. Visitors are invited to get creative and create glitter tattoos or create their works of art in the printing and wood workshop. To make the little guests even more happy, costumes are available that can be rented on site. This is a great opportunity for children to take on the role of their favorite fairy tale characters.
The event should also make it possible to celebrate cultural heritage and keep the stories of the Slavic peoples alive. The importance of Slavic mythology, which is characterized by a variety of beliefs, legends and traditions, is highlighted at the readings organized by the Pirna City Library Support Association. These stories not only reflect the values of the Slavic peoples, but also revive the connections between the past and present. Magical elements such as those found in ritual practices will create an exciting atmosphere.
