Thousands of new students are getting started: Saxony is at a high level of education!

It's that time again in Saxony: thousands of students have started their studies in autumn 2023 and are bringing the universities back to life. The final picture is not yet entirely clear as enrollments continue until the end of October. But the numbers so far are promising.

The University of Leipzig in particular attracts many young people. 6,700 new students have already enrolled there, which is slightly below the previous year's level. The university received around 39,000 applications this year, with interest in certain courses being particularly high. 3,700 people have registered for a bachelor's degree in psychology alone, which means an impressive 57 people interested in each place. Prospective teachers, lawyers and doctors are also well represented.

International students are very popular

A look across the borders shows that international students are also increasingly finding their way to Saxon universities. Around 17,000 foreign students are already enrolled in Saxony, the platform confirms Study in Saxony. The state offers a wide range of courses, but in order to study here, prospective students must meet certain conditions. Above all, sufficient knowledge of German and an equivalent school leaving certificate are prerequisites for admission.

The application deadlines are therefore crucial. The universities require applicants to submit their applications and documents on time. Anyone who comes from an EU country or the EEA states can apply for admission directly to the university, while applicants from other countries often have to provide proof of language skills and educational qualifications.

Student numbers at a glance

In total, Saxon universities have around 104,000 students this semester, a number that has tended to decline slightly in recent years. According to the data of Federal Statistical Office Saxony is in tenth place in the federal state comparison in terms of the total number of students and has the highest proportion of university students at 70 percent.

The current figures show that the number of students in engineering sciences, such as mechanical engineering, is decreasing, while computer science is becoming more and more important. There are natural resources of skilled workers to be found, particularly in the fields of education and medicine, where demand remains consistently high.

Looking into the future, the universities hope that the number of first-year students in Saxony will increase to around 19,100 by 2035, announced the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs. The Saxon universities have a good knack for supporting the next generation of students and further enriching the educational landscape.
