Construction site chaos in Zwickau: two months of closures from July 14th!
From Monday, July 14th, there will again be major traffic disruptions in Zwickau. The city administration has announced that the Crimmitschauer / Werdauer / Humboldtstrasse intersection will be closed in two sections. This measure, which is expected to last a total of around 16 weeks, is intended to avoid longer construction sites and additional closures, such as zwickau.de reported.
In the first section, Crimmitschauer Straße between Werdauer and Moritzstraße will probably be completely closed until the end of September. At the same time, Werdauer Straße up to Bahnhofstraße in Humboldtstraße will also be closed for around 8 weeks. The work includes replacing water, sewer and power lines as well as making the intersection barrier-free. Another highlight of the work is the renovation of the asphalt surface. Particularly interesting: The drinking water pipe is being replaced over 82 meters while the old pipe is being grouted.
What's next?
A challenge will be crossing under the Moritzbach, which will be carried out at a depth of 4.50 meters using a trenchless method. Pedestrians can use sidewalks, but must expect diversions that may be necessary. The driving connection between Werdauer and Humboldtstrasse remains restricted. The new power lines will be laid by Zwickauer Energiebedarf (ZEV), and the traffic islands on Crimmitschauer Straße will also be converted to be barrier-free.
The impact on traffic is significant. Crimmitschauer Straße between Werdauer and Moritzstraße will be completely closed, with a diversion signposted. There will also be changes in local public transport. Tram line 4 will be rerouted via Schumannstrasse and Dr.-Friedrichs-Ring, which will lead to stop relocations at Ringkaffee and Georgenplatz.
Further construction sites in Zwickau
Another hotspot for traffic disruptions are the construction sites on Helmholtzstrasse and Lengenfelder Strasse, where significant restrictions are expected until mid-August 2025. On Helmholtzstraße, for example, there is a full closure between Birkensteig and Wilhelmschachtweg, while Lengenfelder Straße is partially closed until the end of August.
- Helmholtzstraße: Vollsperrung bis 11.07.2025 wegen Abwasserhausanschluss.
- Lengenfelder Straße: Halbseitige Sperrung bis 29.08.2025 für Kanal- und Rohrnetz Erneuerung.
- Pöhlauer Straße: Vollsperrung für Stromkabelverlegung bis 29.08.2025.
And this is just a small excerpt of the current construction sites, which include Georgenplatz and the surrounding streets, where the renewal of the tram tracks is planned by the end of November 2025. This information comes from a comprehensive overview of the construction sites in Zwickau, which is available on zwickau.city-online.info is provided.
