Cupra Born: Will Zwickau remain VW’s electric mecca? Rumors are rife!

There is currently a lot going on in the world of automobile production with Volkswagen and the topic of electromobility. Rumors about the future of the Cupra Born have sent the automotive community into a frenzy. According to current reports, production of the Cupra Born and other electric car models could be relocated from Zwickau to Wolfsburg and Emden from 2027. But in Saxony people don't view the matter quite so negatively. News38 reports that a final decision will not be made until winter and that various factors, such as demand for the popular Tiguan, could play a role by then.

This raises the question: What is the status of the Zwickau plant? A current discussion within Volkswagen management suggests relocating production of the Cupra Born. The background is the impending underutilization of the Zwickau plant. Although only the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Sportback are currently being produced there, the remaining capacity may not be enough to keep the plant running economically. ecomento points out that the annual production for the Cupra Born of a planned 80,000 units is significantly higher than previous sales - only around 11,000 vehicles were sold in the first quarter of 2025.

The role of Daniela Cavallo

VW spokesman comments cautiously on the rumors, but refers to the statements of Daniela Cavallo, chairwoman of the works council. She is fighting for the location and makes it clear that the decision to relocate the Cupra Born to Wolfsburg has not been made. “Production depends heavily on demand,” says Cavallo. A possible withdrawal from Saxony could have a massive impact on employment in Zwickau, where around 8,000 jobs are at risk.

So far, the focus in Zwickau has been on electromobility, which has been promoted there since 2020. In recent years, the factory has produced an impressive 1,000,000 fully electric vehicles. Volkswagen Newsroom states that Volkswagen is continuing to pursue an extensive electric offensive. The ID.3 is in the starting blocks to be fully produced, and its production at the Transparent Factory in Dresden shows that Volkswagen is working on innovative solutions.

Future outlook

The next round of planning will be crucial and could determine the future of the Zwickau location and the production method of the Cupra Born. Relocating the ID.3 and the Cupra Born to Wolfsburg would be a dramatic step. The background is varied, as the plant needs a new electric car platform and preparations for this are already being made in Wolfsburg. Hall 54 will be converted to meet the requirements.

The discussion surrounding the relocation of production remains exciting and will shape Volkswagen's e-mobility strategy in the long term. One thing is certain, however: the pressure to make production efficient and meet demand will put the company and its locations to the test in the coming months.
