Bicycles as e-mobility heroes: This is how VW Zwickau is revolutionizing the way to work!

Bicycles are an essential means of transport for employees at the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau. With over 1,600 bicycles in use, the efficiency of factory traffic has been significantly increased. Daniel Donauser, an employee in the body shop, uses the bike every day to cross the huge halls - significantly shortening a walk that would take ten minutes. The factory itself covers an area of 1,800,000 square meters, equivalent to about 252 football fields, and employs almost 9,000 people ( Free press, cycling.de ).

The founders of the internal cycling season are at least as impressive. The factory has had its own workshop for five years, which mainly deals with women's bikes. Here the bikes receive the necessary maintenance to ensure long-term good performance. E-cargo bikes also have a permanent place in everyday factory life. These special wheels are designed to transport heavy components in the assembly hall and can carry up to 210 kilograms. This makes it easier to transport batteries, for example, and optimizes logistics in the factory ( cycling.de ).

Cooperation for green mobility

Since 2017, the collaboration between Volkswagen and VSC.Bikes has ensured that e-bikes have been seamlessly integrated into factory traffic. The first e-bikes with a Pendix eDrive retrofit kit were introduced in Zwickau in 2022. This makes everyday life even easier for employees, who gain increasingly positive experiences while being able to carry out their tasks more efficiently ( cycling.de ).

In addition, an important ecological aspect is also taken into account in this concept: Volkswagen Zwickau produces CO2-neutrally and thus contributes to environmentally conscious operations. Around 19 million tons of CO2 could be saved every year in Germany just by cycling - a figure that underlines the importance of this mobility technology ( Manager Magazine ).

The example of Volkswagen Zwickau impressively shows how contemporary mobility and environmental awareness can go hand in hand. While the employees race through the halls on their bikes, they are also making a contribution to climate protection. A good knack for sustainable business management pays off!
