Family dispute escalates: large police presence in Bernsbach!
In the small town of Bernsbach in the Ore Mountains, a family dispute led to a massive police operation last Saturday evening. The situation escalated between a 74-year-old father and his 50-year-old son around 6 p.m. when a physical altercation broke out during the argument. The son hit the father on the wrist with a garden tool, which caused acute pain. The 50-year-old then retreated to a residential building or an outbuilding and disappeared.
The police were mobilized into a large contingent. When the first emergency services arrived, the situation was already confusing, so the Evidence Preservation and Arrest Unit (BFE) was called in. This measure not only served to secure the situation, but also to possibly arrest the wanted man. At the same time, the fire department from Bernsbach was alerted because suspected gas bottles were stored in the building. In addition to the police, the district fire chief, an emergency doctor and several ambulances were on duty in order to be prepared for all eventualities.
Lengthy search
The search of the building lasted several hours but was ultimately unsuccessful. Despite intensive efforts, the son we were looking for could not be found. Instead, the emergency services discovered two air guns, which were seized. Fortunately, no one was injured and the police emphasized that there was never any danger to the public. The operation lasted a total of around four hours and ended without the wanted man being arrested.
The background to the dispute remains unclear. The police have started an investigation to clarify the exact course of the altercation and the man's whereabouts. In the meantime, an investigation into grievous bodily harm was initiated against the 50-year-old. This tragedy is not only a snapshot of personal conflicts, but also sheds light on the increasing challenges facing the authorities.
Crime in view
In Germany, the current crime development shows an overall decline in crimes, as reported by the Police Crime Statistics (PKS) 2024. While registered crimes fell to around 5.84 million cases, the decline is primarily due to a decrease in cannabis offenses since partial legalization in April 2024. But at the same time there is an increase in crimes that affect people's sense of security - a circumstance that definitely requires critical consideration. However, the PKS only takes into account the cases known and processed by the police; “Dark field” crimes that are not recorded are not taken into account.
We can only hope that incidents like the one in Bernsbach remain the exception and that everyone involved, especially the family members, are able to resolve their conflicts without such dramatic turns of events. The work of police, fire and emergency services is invaluable in such cases and provides the security that underlies our society.
