Border controls in Reitzenhain: Romanian due to arrest warrant in Zwickau!
On Monday evening there was a temporary stop for a 28-year-old Romanian at the Reitzenhain border crossing. During the check by the Chemnitz Federal Police Inspectorate, an open criminal arrest warrant from the Bayreuth public prosecutor's office was uncovered. This arrest warrant was issued due to drunk driving, and since the man was unable to pay the required fine of over 5,000 euros, he was taken to the Zwickau correctional facility. How View reports, this is not the only incident that has taken place at the border this week.
The federal police arrested a total of nine people who also had outstanding arrest warrants. Another notable case occurred on August 14, when a 56-year-old Romanian man was stopped, also for drunk driving. He too was unable to pay the required fine of almost 4,000 euros and was sent to the Zwickau prison, as was the case Regional mirror supplemented.
Further arrests subsequently occurred
Police also made a number of arrests on August 15 and 16: a 24-year-old Romanian was arrested on suspicion of gang theft, while a 37-year-old Czech was detained for leaving the scene of an accident without permission. However, the latter was lucky: he was able to pay the required sum of 900 euros and continued his journey.
What happened on August 17th is particularly interesting, when a 27-year-old Serb was checked on the basis of an arrest warrant for theft. Lucky for him and a 44-year-old Greek, who were both able to pay their fines and were therefore allowed to continue traveling. The next day, August 18, four more arrest warrants were executed. While a 44-year-old Romanian was taken to the Chemnitz prison for tax evasion, a 34-year-old Czech was able to pay his fine of over 2,200 euros, but had to hand over illegal items such as brass knuckles and drugs.
Security situation and controls at the border
These incidents are part of a comprehensive strategy by the Federal Police, which has been carrying out stationary checks at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland since October 2023. Amid these measures, over 5,000 people were arrested on warrants between October 16, 2023 and April 30, 2024.
An overview of the arrests and drugs:
- Personen mit Haftbefehlen festgenommen: 5048
- Drogen und Waffen beschlagnahmt: 3527 Fälle
- Verstöße gegen das Sprengstoffgesetz: Festgestellt
- Unerlaubte Einreisen von Migranten: 36.161
- Migranten über die Grenze geschleust: 7401
A decrease in unauthorized entries was also noted: from around 21,000 in September 2023 to around 7,500 in April 2024. These measures have proven effective in combating smuggling and limiting irregular migration. Internal border controls between Germany and Austria, which have been in place since 2015, have also been extended until November 2024 to further ensure security, especially in light of the upcoming European Football Championship.
Recent events related to border controls show that the authorities have a good hand at catching potential criminals. It remains to be seen what further measures and developments will follow in the coming weeks and months to increase security at the borders.
