Traveling exhibition: Discover the future of timber construction in Zwickau!

Something is happening in the city of Zwickau: On June 28, 2025, the traveling exhibition “WOOD PATHS – Sustainable timber construction in Central Germany” will open in the town hall. Building mayor Sylvia Queck will ceremoniously inaugurate the exhibition in the foyer of the first floor of the town hall at 10 a.m. Until August 1, 2025, visitors can discover 38 outstanding wooden construction projects from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, ranging from residential buildings to public buildings and commercial buildings. As the city of Zwickau reports, the focus is on promoting timber construction and regional expertise.

Why wood? The answer is simple: wood is not only a renewable raw material, but also offers the opportunity to design the construction method in a way that conserves resources. At a time when sustainability is very important, timber construction and innovative approaches in this area are very popular. “Wood as a versatile, lightweight building material not only enables short construction times through high levels of prefabrication, but also offers solutions to the challenges of demographic change,” explains Alexander Bonde from the German Federal Environmental Foundation in a context that also reflects the exhibition “HOLZ.BAU.ARCHITEKTUR”, which highlights the current state of the art in timber construction. This makes it clear that wood is much more than just a material.

Diversity and innovation in timber construction

What can visitors to the exhibition in Zwickau expect? In addition to the presentation of the interesting timber construction projects, there is an accompanying bilingual catalog that takes a closer look at the advantages of sustainable construction. The exhibition, initiated by the Sustainable Planning, Building and Certification working group of the Saxon Chamber of Architects, emphasizes the importance of wood and at the same time shows how tradition and modern technology can harmonize with each other in wood construction. Current developments in timber construction show that innovative digital planning methods and precise manufacturing techniques lead to aesthetic and functional buildings that meet all energy efficiency requirements.

However, the skepticism of many planners and architects towards wood remains a challenge. Clarification is needed here! The exhibition is intended to help young civil engineers and architects in particular to deal intensively with the possibilities of timber construction. It is aimed at private and public developers as well as planning offices in order to promote a more conscious and sustainable use of our resources.

Opening times and admission

The exhibition opens its doors from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free, which makes the visit even more attractive. Take the opportunity to explore the fascinating projects and possibilities of timber construction. The ecological footprint we leave behind in construction can be significantly reduced with wood. It's time to seize this opportunity!
