Zwickau puppet theater in rotation: Gerboc's farewell and new visions!
The first half of 2025 will bring a wave of change and celebration to the Zwickau Puppet Theater. To mark the institution's 70th anniversary, outgoing director Monika Gerboc organized an emotional farewell party at which she symbolically scattered gold dust on the stage floor. She wanted to record that while memories blur, the productions remain in any case. Gerboc led the puppet theater for almost a whole decade and is now saying goodbye with mixed feelings after warmly introducing her successor Christine Schmidle and dramaturg Alexej Vancl to their new position. Blick.de reports.
Jürgen Flemming, managing director of Kultour Z., noted that Gerboc brought attention to the director position with remarkable persistence. She persisted and called him over 18 times to clarify her vision for the theater. During her tenure, she initiated creative projects such as “German Ballads” with VR glasses and internationally acclaimed puppet theater festivals, which opened up a new dimension for the city.
A new chapter begins
Gerboc's departure coincides with a time of change. Schmidle, who now holds the reins, brings with her extensive experience from 14 different theaters, including the famous Shakespeare's Globe in London. A new wind is also blowing through the dramaturgy, as Alexej Vancl will be helping to shape the artistic decisions from November. Together they plan to lead the puppet theater into an even more creative future.
The farewell was not only important for Gerboc personally, but also for many visitors - including the married couple Franziska and Konrad Till, who came together in one of Gerboc's productions. At the official farewell, the audience was visibly moved by Gerboc's last production, “Can you whistle, Johanna,” which premiered on June 22nd. It deals with death and loss and deeply touched many of those present.
