Fuel prices are exploding: thanks to the Middle East conflict, refueling is becoming more expensive!
The price tags at gas stations in Cologne are currently pointing steeply upwards. The military conflicts in the Middle East, especially between Israel and Iran, are having a noticeable impact on fuel prices in Germany, reports ADAC. The costs for Super E10 rose by 2.4 cents and diesel prices even rose by 3.9 cents. The federal average price for Super E10 is currently 1,692 euros per liter, while diesel is 1,589 euros. The difference between the two fuels leaves the 10 cent mark and is now 10.3 cents.
What are the causes of this increase? The Mirror points out that the current conflicts have led to an increase in the price of crude oil, which is currently around $76 per barrel. This represents an increase of around $9 compared to the previous week. Experts warn that a possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic trade route for crude oil, could further aggravate the situation.
Price development in detail
The price increase is particularly pronounced in some federal states. The diesel price at a reference filling station will increase by 16 cents to 1.65 euros per liter, while the price for Super E10 will increase by 14 cents to 1.76 euros per liter. For a tank of 60 liters, drivers now pay 9.60 euros more than at the beginning of the previous week. Car picture highlights that this price increase is the largest since the 2020 Corona crisis, and experts fear that prices could rise to as much as $100 per barrel. This could not only put a strain on drivers, but also fuel inflation and threaten economic growth.
The ADAC analysts note that diesel reacts more strongly to market changes than gasoline. Additionally, the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East could have a long-term impact on oil prices. An ADAC spokesman is currently signaling that the oil companies will pass on the increased crude oil prices to drivers.
Tips for drivers
There are a few tips for all Cologne gas station owners to save on refueling. Collins recommends paying attention to the price differences between gas stations, which can amount to up to 7 cents per liter. Drivers should also avoid expensive E5, as Super E10 is usually cheaper. An ADAC credit card also offers a fuel discount of 2 percent, and the ADAC membership card gives you a 1 cent discount per liter at Shell and Agip/Eni gas stations.
The cheapest prices can currently be found in Saarland, where Super E10 costs 1,639 euros and diesel costs 1,542 euros per liter. In contrast, prices are highest in Hamburg: Super E10 is 1,734 euros there, diesel in Schleswig-Holstein is 1,624 euros.
Anyone who fills up in the evening between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. can also benefit from the lower prices. However, it is most expensive in the morning shortly after 7 a.m., when diesel is on average 13.3 cents more expensive and petrol is 12.5 cents more expensive.
The current situation shows how quickly geopolitical tensions can be reflected in prices at gas stations. Drivers in Cologne are well advised to regularly inform themselves about the development of fuel prices and, if necessary, to adjust their fueling habits.
