Monument Day 2025: Discover 32 treasures in the Altenburger Land!

There will soon be reason to be happy in Altenburg, because on September 14, 2025 the doors to more than 30 monuments will open and invite the population to discover the city's treasures. This year's Monument Day has the motto “Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?”, a call to focus on the social significance of monuments. How Altenburgerland.de describes, the day will be ceremonially introduced on Friday, September 12th, with a festive opening concert by the Altenburg-Gera Philharmonic Orchestra in the Brüderkirche. Before that, District Administrator Uwe Melzer will award winners for their civic engagement in monument preservation.

Visitors can look forward to a number of exciting tours and programs this sunny Sunday. Loud stadt-altenburg.de 32 monuments in Altenburger Land are open to the public. Among other things, tours of the historic building at Lindenaustraße 9, which was built between 1892 and 1895, provide a fascinating insight into local history. Tours are scheduled here from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m.

A colorful program for young and old

The program promises a variety of offers: tours of the construction site through the State Theater, tours of the district court on Burgstrasse and the Altenburger Brewery are on the agenda. A station game is organized especially for children, and their physical well-being is also taken care of. In addition, a photo exhibition in the city archives offers interesting insights into demolished buildings with the title “Disappeared from the cityscape and forgotten?” vdl-denkmalpflege.de.

This year the city of Altenburg is taking part in the Europe-wide campaign for the 32nd time. The wide range of cultural monuments shows not only the diversity of our history, but also the social mandate to preserve and value cultural heritage. The preservation of these monuments not only serves the present, but also creates a bridge to the future, which enables us to connect future generations with our history.

Special features of Monument Day

One of the special highlights is the presentation of the “Grand Ouvert e.V.” association. in Topfmarkt 6 and a supporting program in the Stadtforum Altenburg in the former playing card factory at Fabrikstrasse 44. There are also two trade fairs taking place as part of Monument Day: The “ldee3 – Fair for Creativity, Culture & Economy” in the Marstall and the “no selection” trade fair in the old hospital at Leipziger Strasse 55. Anyone who wants to experience the diversity of monuments should not miss this opportunity!
