Fire and water: THW saves Altenburg from great danger!

A serious incident occurred in Altenburg today: an accident related to a fire is causing excitement in the region. The cooperation between the fire brigade and the Technical Relief Agency (THW) is taking on an increasingly important role. Reports from news.de According to the fire department, the fire brigade is currently on duty in Gohrischheide, where an extensive fire has to be fought.

The THW is proving to be an indispensable partner in water logistics for fire-fighting water supply. The emergency services use modern technology such as high-performance pumps, mobile water tanks and extensive hose lines to supply the fire department with sufficient extinguishing water regardless of existing infrastructure. Helpers from the THW pump water from a gravel pit near Boragk and transport it to the fire via a 2.5 kilometer long hose route.

Efficient water logistics in use

Three THW water bladders are available to supply the fire department and farmers with water. The performance of the THW's large pumps, which are able to pump up to 25,000 liters of water per minute, is particularly impressive. There are only ten such large THW pumps in the entire country, two of which are in the state association of Saxony and Thuringia. One of them is stationed in the Riesa local branch, the other in Apolda.

type.type Delivery capacity
Large pump up to 25,000 l/min
Smaller pumps 12,000 l/min

The THW water damage/pumps specialist group, which is represented over 80 times nationwide, is particularly important in such operations. They specialize in combating flooding and actively help remove water and mud from affected buildings and traffic routes. Not only is water available for firefighting, but sewer lines can also be built or repaired to restore the infrastructure as quickly as possible.

Joint action against natural forces

The need for effective fire service support is particularly high in the current situation. How zeit.de reported that 1,000 emergency services are fighting the devastating forest fires that have already destroyed 2,100 hectares in the Gohrischheide. Over 200 volunteers from 19 local THW branches were mobilized to transport water to the fire sites and fill collection basins for firefighting operations.

The situation remains tense and the importance of water in combating vegetation fires cannot be overstated. The THW not only provides technical support, but also ensures the safety of the emergency services through comprehensive logistics measures.

The preparations for fighting the fire are immense, and the cooperation between different emergency services shows what is possible when everyone pulls together. Whether during forest fires or other disasters – the tireless efforts of volunteers give the population hope and security.
