Memory and change: Commemorative hike for the opening of the border on November 9th!

On November 9th, a memorial hike will be offered in Teistungen to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the opening of the inner-German border. According to the Thüringer Allgemeine, this part of history is celebrated with a guided hike by the Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld. The start is at 5 p.m. and the meeting point is at the museum. The original lighting on the border strip will also be switched on to support the shared memory of overcoming division.

Particularly striking is the Duderstadt/Worbis border crossing, which was the first to open in Thuringia on November 9, 1989 at 12:35 a.m. The Bornholmer Straße border crossing in Berlin also opened just a few hours later at 11:30 p.m. As a result, crowds of people flocked to the crossings and new connection options emerged along the inner-German border.

Memory and exploration

A highlight of the hike is the visit to the original observation tower of the GDR border troops on the Pferdeberg. This is one of the few towers that is used as a museum. Participation in the hike is free and takes about two hours.

Anyone interested in another historical experience can take the guided hike on the top Schifflersgrund border hiking trail from the Schifflersgrund Border Museum on the same day. This is an opportunity to get to know the region better while appreciating its rich history. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs five euros. Advance registration is required here.

Advent campaigns and health days

Another interesting event is coming up on November 14th and 15th: the Uganda Circle's Advent flea market in the St. Aegidien community hall in Heiligenstadt. Junk can be dropped off on November 12th between 4 and 6 p.m. and the proceeds will go to Uganda Circle projects.

The event “Together instead of alone” will be organized for single parents on November 15th at the Dingelstadt family center Kerbscher Berg, where registration is required and child care is offered.

As part of World Diabetes Day, an information program will take place on November 14th at the Evangelical Hospital Göttingen-Weende from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is estimated that around eleven million people live with diabetes in Germany, although the number of unreported cases is significantly higher. The International Diabetes Federation describes diabetes as a “global epidemic” that poses increasing challenges for health systems.

Facts about diabetes

The main cause of diabetes is impaired insulin production, of which there are mainly two types: type 1 diabetes, which is characterized by an absolute lack of insulin, and type 2 diabetes, which is the most common and results from insulin resistance. In Germany, the prevalence of diabetes is 7.2% of adults. This not only increases the number of patients, but also the associated costs, which amount to an average of around 2,900 euros per patient.

If you would like to find out more about the costs and the increasing number of diabetics, you can visit the Statista website, which provides comprehensive data and statistics on this important topic.

In summary, November 9th is not only a date with moving historical significance, but also an opportunity to participate in various events and focus on important social issues such as health and community.
