The 2025 summer holidays have caused a real passenger boom at Erfurt Airport. How Borken newspaper reported that significantly more passengers were handled this year than last year. Around 64,000 passengers started their vacation from Erfurt, while there were around 29,000 during the 2024 summer holidays. This rapid growth shows that the airport has significantly expanded its range of connections and destinations around the Mediterranean.
Night flights are particularly popular. Erfurt Airport is one of the few German airports that offer such a service. There are only seven airports nationwide that offer night flights. This flexibility is well received by travelers, which is reflected in the popularity of the destinations, among other things.
Popular travel destinations and modes of transport
The most popular destination from Erfurt was Antalya in Turkey, where around 41,500 passengers went. Mallorca was also in high demand with around 9,400 passengers, followed by Hurghada in Egypt with around 8,000 travelers and Crete in Greece, which was visited by around 4,200 passengers. The main airlines serving these routes include Sun Express, Eurowings and Air Cairo.
The airport managing director Susanne Hermann is optimistic and expects the positive development to continue during the autumn holidays. Due to the high demand, the airlines have increased their capacities accordingly.
Growth forecast and visitor markets
Looking ahead, the airport has targeted about 250,000 passengers for 2025, compared to 170,000 last year. This shows that the airport is not only an important location for the region, but is also generating growing interest among travelers.
Overall, Erfurt Airport shows that it has established itself as an attractive departure airport for travelers from the surrounding area. With a seamless offering that takes passengers' wishes into account, improving the region's infrastructure and the airport's growth trajectory could be closely linked.
