Erfurt's city center suffers: long -term businesses are finally closing!

Schlösserstraße 20, 99084 Erfurt, Deutschland - in Erfurt it gets calmer around the Anger: Several long -term businesses have closed their doors in the past few weeks. The departure of the "Only" clothing store and the fashion jewelry chain "Claire’s" is particularly striking. These unexpected closures bring a breath of fresh air, but also concern about the future of retail in the city center. In fact, financial burdens from the Covid-19 pandemic and other crises are a major challenge for many retailers, as can be seen from a BBSR study. This problem not only affects Erfurt, but is a comprehensive phenomenon that leaves some business the water up to the neck.

Especially in Schlösserstraße 20, a lot has moved in recent years. The former shop "Brink" moved to a larger shop at the cathedral square about a year ago. After it moved out, the decision for the jewelry and watch service "Rewa Timecheck" was made, which was only on stage for a short time- this closed his doors again soon. In December 2024, the Naturkost wholesaler took the area directly, but after only a few months under the name "Best Ramp" the time had expired: After a final sale, the shift was in shaft at the end of May.

However, there is a gratifying turn: since June 11, 2023, works of art have been exhibited in the former shop area that address the historic Krämerbrückenfest. The art project 2.13 used this opportunity to present the city's cultural diversity and creativity. This development shows that in Erfurt there is certainly potential for new uses of rooms, even if retail has visible difficulties.

The City management Erfurt is now actively looking for a suitable subsequent tenant for the area. There is hope that life will soon return to Schlösserstrasse. The Erfurt city administration recently announced the Krämerbrückenfest, which will be opened on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. on the Benediktsplatz. The festival will offer a colorful program with a theater spectacle and musical performances by local artists and international bands - a clear request not to give up the city center.

A look into the future

The challenges for retail and inner city development will remain a central topic in the future. The BBSR study not only formulates recommendations for action to strengthen the city centers, but also shows that municipalities are crucial for the positive development of these rooms. Important steps to revitalize and maintain the economic basis are necessary so that the city center does not continue to become a shadow of itself.

So it remains to be hoped that the Erfurters not only enjoy the cultural events on the Anger, but also prove a good knack for future business and can continue to boost life in the city center. There is something for the future of the city!
