Major fire in Erfurt: Huge column of smoke over a former slaughterhouse!
A large column of smoke caused a stir in Erfurt today. A fire broke out on the site of the former slaughterhouse on Greifswalder Straße, which quickly called the police to the scene. Residents were informed via the NINA warning app and asked to keep their windows closed. This is particularly important because the fire brigade is on duty with both fire engines and wildly deposited tires are on fire, causing massive smoke. So far there have been no injuries reported, which at least provides some all-clear.
There are currently 62 emergency services on site to fight the fire. These must be prepared for an expected duration of at least three hours. Over the course of the morning, over 180 calls were reported to the Erfurt control center in which concerned citizens reported the large amount of smoke. The fire brigade is active with several turntable ladders and jet pipes and is fighting the flames. However, drivers must be prepared for disruptions in the area of Greifswalder and Leipziger Straße.
Alarming situation for residents
The situation remains tense as the smoke continues. The fire department has also asked residents to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off all ventilation systems. Concerned citizens are concerned about possible cloudiness of drinking water in adjacent areas, which could be due to the materials stored there. Such a solution would certainly not be in the interests of the population.
On Sunday morning, October 15th, there was another notable fire in Erfurt. A fire broke out at the BMW dealer on Justus-Liebig-Straße, affecting around 15 cars. The suspected trigger was technical defects in one vehicle, which quickly spread to other cars. Unlike the current fire, the fire brigade reported after about an hour that they had brought the fire under control. The estimated damage was around 350,000 euros, but fortunately there were no injuries in this case either.
With the fire department in prayer
Current events shed light on the risk of fire in urban areas and highlight the challenges facing firefighting today. Statistics show that fires are becoming common in urban areas and information to improve fire safety is essential. However, according to FeuerTrutz there is a lack of comprehensive and uniform fire statistics for Germany.
While the fire department currently has its hands full, we hope for relief and an end to the danger soon. The citizens of Erfurt are well advised to remain vigilant and, if necessary, follow developments in order to, in the best case scenario, get out of this situation without further complications.
