ICE between Erfurt and Nuremberg again - police investigated!
After a nerve -wracking time for travelers between Erfurt and Nuremberg, the trains can return as scheduled. The ICE route was closed for about a week and a half after a fire caused massive damage in a pedestrian underpass in Hirschaid (Bavaria). The police have taken up the investigation and suspected arson. Fortunately, the damage to the underpass has now been remedied, so that the blocking could finally be lifted, such as mdr reported.
The situation was anything but satisfactory during the blocking for passengers: trains needed up to 1 hour and 40 minutes longer between Nuremberg and Erfurt. In addition, the ICE trains did not keep in Coburg, Erlangen and Bamberg during this time, which made circumstances difficult for many travelers. In particular, the intercity trains between Jena and Nuremberg were completely out of what the travel planning brought for many additional complications.
bottlenecks and delays
Even if the block has now been lifted, there may still be a few restrictions. Another look at the traffic planning shows that the ICE route between Munich and Berlin remains closed for longer. Massive impairments are also to be expected here, according to information from Süddeutscher Zeitung .
travelers are still being diverted between Nuremberg and Erfurt, which entails additional delays of about 90 minutes. The holding in important cities such as Erlangen, Bamberg and Coburg are completely eliminated, which many commuters and travelers present again with challenges. In order to defuse the situation, Deutsche Bahn has set up replacement traffic with commuting trains and buses, which, however, also have to expect longer travel times due to the high utilization of the alternatives.
anticipation for new trains
A ray of hope in the otherwise dark traffic situation is the upcoming innovations of Deutsche Bahn. By 2030, the DB is planning to expand its express train fleet with 73 additional ICE trains. The new models, ICE 3NEO and ICE L, will soon be put into operation. While the ICE 3NEO has been in use since the end of 2022, the ICE L will be used on various routes from October 2024, including between Cologne and Oberstdorf, Berlin and Amsterdam. 24rhein stands out particularly with barrier-free freedom is.
Developments in rail traffic show that despite the current challenges with fires and delays, rethinking and continuous improvement in the infrastructure are underway. So let's stay optimistic when it comes to the future travel experiences on rails.
