Cool refreshment: Discover the best excursion destinations in Thuringia!

With the last hot weekend in late summer, Thuringia is showing off its best side. If you're looking to cool off, you shouldn't miss the Marienglashöhle. This breathtaking Show cave lies picturesquely between Friedrichroda and Bad Tabarz and delights visitors with its underground wonders. An underground lake and impressive gypsum crystals await guests, who will find welcome refreshment in constant temperatures of 8-10 degrees Celsius.

The Marienglashöhle has a special history: the construction of the entrance tunnel began in 1775 to extract copper and a short time later huge deposits of gypsum were discovered. The cave attracts around 71,000 visitors every year and guided tours are an absolute must. If you choose the right time and place, you can admire the crystals, which are up to 90 cm long and are known as Marienglas. These unique gypsum crystals make the Marienglashöhle a geological natural monument and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Opening times and entrance fees

The cave is open daily from April 1st to October 31st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and in winter until 4 p.m. A regular entry price of 11 euros, reduced 9.50 euros, and for families it can cost up to 30 euros in total. Children up to 16 years of age pay 7 euros, and very young children up to 5 years of age can enter for free.

Other excursion destinations in Thuringia

In addition to the Marienglashöhle, there are numerous other places in Thuringia that are suitable for a visit. Anyone who is passionate about history should Schwarzburg Castle and that Burgk Castle don't miss it. Both offer exciting insights into the history of Thuringia and are open from April to October.

  • Schloss Schwarzburg: Historische Waffensammlung, Eintritt 8 Euro.

The opening times are convenient so that everyone has the opportunity to have this experience.
