Table tennis finals 2026: Erfurt will become a competition hotspot!

The anticipation for the third German table tennis finals is growing: from June 4th to 7th, 2026, the Erfurt trade fair will be the stage for a variety of competitions. The focus is on women, men and youth classes 15 and 19, as well as seniors and performance classes. As bttv.de reports, the media presence of this major event in Germany will be significantly greater than for separate tournaments, as comprehensive reporting is planned. The MDR and the DTTB YouTube channel are central players.

Dr. Wolfgang Dörner, the CEO of the DTTB, highlights the TT finals as a “major nationwide event” whose importance in the table tennis landscape should not be underestimated. However, there remains a downer, as the Senior World Championships are taking place at the same time in Gangneung, South Korea. This scheduling conflict presents the athletes with the tricky choice of which event they want to take part in, as Dörner regrets.

Planned competitions and supporting program

Although the Senior World Cup was only announced in July 2024, the DTTB had already reserved the June weekend for the TT finals in May 2023. In addition, the professional team world championship is coming up in London in May 2026. Despite the simultaneous major events, the majority of seniors were in favor of retaining the Senior DM as part of the TT finals. The senior wardens of the DTTB regional associations also supported the holding of the senior competitions in Erfurt and confirmed that all age groups compete in the same hall, which gives the event additional appeal.

The access that participants and accompanying persons will enjoy is also particularly appealing: they are allowed to use all areas of the TT Finals, including the professional competitions. In addition, an extensive supporting program is planned to round off the event. The DTTB is also planning to set up shower containers on the exhibition grounds to counteract criticism of the small number of showers. Dr. Dörner emphasized that the concept of the TT Finals is being further developed and the new edition of the event is a big step in this direction.

A look at the international senior competitions

Parallel to the German table tennis finals, the 2024 Senior World Championships will take place in Rome, which will feature a top-class athletic and sporting field. Numerous players from different countries have already qualified in the various categories. The Portuguese Joao Monteiro leads the list in the senior 40 singles, while the Romanian Lucian Filimon holds first place in the senior 45 singles. The German athletes also showed strong, including Anna Hovikyan in the senior 45 individual and Ding Yaping in the senior 55 individual.

Here are some of the top rankings from the 2024 Senior World Championships based on athletes' sporting achievements:
