Experience tips on the day of reunification: Discover historical places!
On October 3rd, a whole day is dedicated to reunification and the memory of the time when Germany was divided. You can celebrate this special day with several excursions and events. MDR has developed exciting tips that are both historical and entertaining.
An absolute highlight is the visit to Jahrsau near Salzwedel, a once inhabited village that was evacuated in the 1960s through forced relocations under the GDR regime. Today Jahrsau is considered a desert and is located on the “Green Belt”, a paradise for nature lovers. The “ Grenzwandler ” app can be used here to explore the area and listen to contemporary witness reports. Those who prefer to experience nature actively have the opportunity to take part in a bike tour along the former column path. This tour takes around 2.5 hours over 12 kilometers to the former village and offers fascinating insights into the flora and fauna of the region. The Altmark Rundschau reports that participants can observe cranes, nightingales and old trees, among other things.
Memories and experiences
The exploration experience in Jahrsau is supplemented by the "Grenzwandler" app, which offers interactive leadership with videos and audio files on the history of the place. Participants are invited to bring their own bicycles with them and the tour can be visited free of charge, whereby donations for nature and environmental protection are welcome. A firm shoe is a must to cycle through the historical and natural environment.
Another highlight of this weekend is the visit to the Perlmutter adventure museum in Adorf. This revolves around the river sperm shell and its importance for the history of the mussel industry in the Vogtland. The museum not only fascinates with its modern architecture, which is reminiscent of a shell, but also with exciting exhibitions. Entry is 9 euros for adults, and children can start their journey of discovery for 6 euros.
Cultural experience in Jena
The play “Guten Morgen, Zukunft”, which is based on Maxie Wander’s cult book and focuses on the experiences of women in East Germany, offers a special kind of acting experience. It will be performed on October 2nd and 3rd at 8 p.m. and is recommended for ages 15 and up. This performance reminds us of the experiences of an entire generation that lived under the social conditions of the GDR.
