Gotha on the move: Mayor presents plans for the future!

On July 22, 2025, an information event took place in the large hall of the Baugesellschaft Gotha (BGG), which was led by Mayor Knut Kreuch. Over 50 interested citizens accepted the invitation to find out about the current and planned projects in the city. Kreuch presented a variety of topics that concern the future of Gotha and were certainly of interest to many visitors.

Some of the main concerns Kreuch raised included road construction, the future of the main train station and the status of the former department stores on Erfurter Strasse. A particularly notable topic was the discussion surrounding new shopping centers planned for the city. The mayor also reported on the difficulties associated with opening a new restaurant in the western district. Low user numbers in particular make the situation challenging for investors.

Important infrastructure projects and challenges

A central point in Kreuch's presentation was the aqueduct, which is owned by the federal government. Unfortunately, a clear decision on the restoration of the historic building will still be years away. This uncertainty could impact urban development. Despite these challenges, the city center, particularly the idea of a “tourist city railway,” received great applause from those in attendance. This shows the citizens' strong interest in promoting tourism and strengthening the city center.

It is also important that Gotha wants to establish itself as a strong business location. The focus is on projects such as the GothA4 industrial area on the motorway and the new construction work on Kindleber Straße to improve the development of Gotha-Ost. “Gotha has to prove itself every day,” announced Kreuch, emphasizing that regular company visits and the participation of entrepreneurs in city events are a central part of the city’s economic development. Formats such as the “Business Club” and the “Scholars’ Meeting” promote exchange between the city and business.

Collaboration and future highlights

Kreuch strongly emphasizes cooperation with surrounding communities; he sees competition as a wrong answer to future challenges. A successful example of this is the “Thüringer Bogen”, which demonstrates cooperation in the region. One of the highlights of the coming year is Thuringia Day on May 5th, which will be very well received, even if a royal visit is not expected.

In order to continue to shape the cityscape positively, it is important to also keep an eye on the traditional festivals. In 2026, the ruling families of Great Britain and Belgium will celebrate 200 years of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which underlines Gotha's cultural anchoring in European history. Kreuch even has contacts with various royal families, which gives the city a special light.

Overall, the event shows that Gotha is well on its way to facing the challenges of the future and implementing ambitious projects. The large number of participants confirms the interest of the citizens and the commitment of the city administration.
