Fire in an apartment building in Greiz: Police are looking for the perpetrator!
A worrying incident occurred in Greiz on October 13, 2025: a fire in an apartment building that was presumably caused by arson. Loud MDR Investigators determined that two strollers were set on fire on the ground floor of the stairwell and in the basement. The police found no evidence of a politically motivated background to the incident and ruled out technical defects as the cause of the fire.
Nine of a total of 21 residents were slightly injured in the fire. Six of them had to be taken to hospital for treatment but have since been released. The affected people were initially accommodated in a gymnasium and have now been accommodated by relatives. The material damage amounts to around 50,000 euros. The house is currently not habitable as soot and damage needs to be removed.

The police have asked for the public's support and are looking for witnesses who can provide information. Please provide information about the Information portal to provide. On the same day, eight cars were also damaged nearby, including a police car, although no connection to the fire is suspected.
The incident in Greiz is another example of the challenges facing firefighting in Germany. According to the vfdb Kitchens are often the most common place for fires to break out. It is worth noting that 83% of building fires occur up to the second floor. Statistics also show that the period between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. is usually associated with a higher level of damage, even if fewer fires are registered.
The current situation has also put trust in fire safety measures to the test. The vfdb encourages fire departments to participate in data collection in order to gain insights into defensive and preventive fire protection. Mainly, these statistics are aimed at making informed decisions in fire safety, which is of great importance for the safety of all citizens.
