Burglaries in Gera kindergarten and Greiz school – police are looking for witnesses

In recent days, police in Gera and Greiz have identified a number of break-ins at educational institutions that are causing concern. At the weekend, more precisely between September 12th and 15th, 2025, unknown perpetrators tried to force their way into the Free Elstertalschule in Greiz and the kindergarten “Am Molwurfshügel” in Gera. These incidents resulted in property damage in the low four-digit range, and the police have now launched an investigation into particularly serious theft, as these were attempted burglaries.

According to MDR, at 1:37 p.m. the police were looking for witnesses who could help clarify the crimes. The perpetrators pried open several doors in the Gera kindergarten, where they stole some items, including around 25 euros from group cash registers and a charger with batteries. In the Free Elstertal School, however, the burglars were unable to get inside because they screwed on four doors with unknown tools, but were unsuccessful.

The role of the community

The Greiz police ask the public to pay attention to suspicious observations and to report information by calling 03661 621-0. Such acts not only cast a dark light on the safety of educational institutions but also on the community that must come together to prevent such incidents.

Looking at the global situation, a study by Destatis shows that more than 6,000 attacks on educational institutions were registered worldwide in 2022 and 2023. These attacks target students and teachers and affect buildings and resources such as school buses. Tragically, more than 10,000 students and teachers were killed, injured or otherwise harmed.

A call to action

The United Nations has designated September 9 as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack to draw attention to the plight of millions of children out of school due to conflict. It is important that we come together here locally and do not tolerate violent attacks on educational institutions like those that took place in Gera and Greiz.

The current incidents are another reason to think about safety in schools and kindergartens. Education is a fundamental human right as enshrined in Article 26 of Human Rights. It is up to all of us to protect this right and ensure that our children can learn and grow in a safe environment.
