Disaster alert and evacuations
A disaster alert was declared in the affected communities of Zeithain, Wülknitz and the city of Gröditz. In particular, the Neudorf district in Zeithain and the approximately 100 residents of Heidehäuser in Wülknitz had to be evacuated. The rapid deployment of the authorities and emergency services is of utmost importance in both Saxony and Thuringia in order to quickly overcome the impending dangers.
Those active on site are not alone: reinforcements from Bavaria have also arrived, meaning that a total of over 1,000 emergency services are deployed at both fire locations. 562 forces have now been mobilized at Saalfelder Höhe and it is expected that further help will be available by Sunday. The large contingent also includes fire-fighting helicopters, which are provided by both the Federal Police and the Bundeswehr.
The challenge for the fire department
The emergency services are facing a real challenge. Strong winds have fanned the fire and armored fire engines are also being used alongside firefighting helicopters. This strategic approach is necessary because numerous embers have been identified in the forest area, which further complicates the situation. The fire brigade is preparing for a longer operation and has even set up fire stations overnight to keep the flames at bay.
According to experts from the Thuringia Forestry State Forestry Company, this fire is the largest in the region since 1993.
