Major fire in Saxony and Thuringia: Evacuations and disaster alarm!
There is currently a disturbing sight in Saxony and Thuringia: several large forest fires are starting, and hundreds of firefighters and farmers are mobilized to fight the flames. In the Gohrischheide region in Saxony and on the Saalfelder Höhe in Thuringia, the emergency services are under high pressure to prevent the fire from spreading. The situation remains tense, especially since the fire area in Thuringia has now grown from the original 10 hectares to around 250 hectares. This is information reported by tagesschau.de.
The fire broke out on Tuesday near a former military training area, and the danger is further exacerbated by detonating ammunition located in the ground. The fire brigade and air rescue must maintain a safety distance of at least 1,000 meters in order to minimize any further risk for the emergency services.
Disaster alert and evacuations
A disaster alert was declared in the affected communities of Zeithain, Wülknitz and the city of Gröditz. In particular, the Neudorf district in Zeithain and the approximately 100 residents of Heidehäuser in Wülknitz had to be evacuated. The rapid deployment of the authorities and emergency services is of utmost importance in both Saxony and Thuringia in order to quickly overcome the impending dangers.
Those active on site are not alone: reinforcements from Bavaria have also arrived, meaning that a total of over 1,000 emergency services are deployed at both fire locations. 562 forces have now been mobilized at Saalfelder Höhe and it is expected that further help will be available by Sunday. The large contingent also includes fire-fighting helicopters, which are provided by both the Federal Police and the Bundeswehr.
The challenge for the fire department
The emergency services are facing a real challenge. Strong winds have fanned the fire and armored fire engines are also being used alongside firefighting helicopters. This strategic approach is necessary because numerous embers have been identified in the forest area, which further complicates the situation. The fire brigade is preparing for a longer operation and has even set up fire stations overnight to keep the flames at bay.
According to experts from the Thuringia Forestry State Forestry Company, this fire is the largest in the region since 1993. This highlights the seriousness of the situation and the need for a comprehensive strategy against forest fires, which has become increasingly severe in recent years. A study from 2023 also shows a significant increase in forest fires compared to previous years in terms of the risk of forest fires in the coming decades umweltbundesamt.de.
Overall, it is important that everyone involved - from the firefighters to the farmers to the affected residents - work hand in hand to manage the situation. The public is asked to stay away from the fire areas and to respectfully follow the instructions of the incident commanders.
