District Administrator Enders raises the alarm: Expensive permanent flag for Thuringian offices!

Ilm-Kreis, Deutschland - Yesterday the new flagship regulation for Thuringia came into force, and it can already be seen today that the discussions about the topic are alive as ever. The district administrator of the ILM district, Petra Enders, expressed violent concerns about the high costs that could arise from the long-term expenses of public institutions. She fears that the funds should be invested in more important topics for the population instead of in flags and setting up.

The regulation itself, which has been in effect since July 18, 2025, obliges public buildings that belong to state authorities to flag with the national flags of Germany, Thuringia and the EU. This regulation not only affects administrative buildings, but also extends to police stations and tax offices. According to reports from MDR, it is sufficient for authorities with several locations if the flag trio only blows on one building.

Important details about flag

What are the exact regulations for the flag? The state government has clearly stipulated that sovereign flags that are not listed in the regulation may only be set with the approval of the Ministry for the Interior, Construction and Digitization. In particular, the flag must take place on the respective service building. For several departments in one building, the administrative office is responsible, as lexaris explained.

The following standard applies to the order of the flags to be hanged: The flags of international associations must be at the top, followed by foreign flags and finally the state flag. This means that the German flag should always blow on the front front, followed by the Thuringian flag and the European flag.

community autonomy and local opinions

However, it should be noted that this regulation is not noteworthy for cities, municipalities and circles. Here the municipalities themselves decide whether and in front of which buildings flag are hoisted. As Petra Enders found, this could be seen as a welcome way to distract from the national discussion and to put more local concerns in the foreground. It pleads to only hoist a certain flag to minimize the costs.

A look at the financial aspects shows that the expenditure for the long-term flagship in the ILM district could go into a six-digit range. Such sums could be better invested in projects that would actually benefit the citizens, according to Enders. It remains to be seen how the opinion of the local population will develop and what decisions the respective municipalities make to meet the new requirements.

The discussion about the flagship of public buildings is therefore part of the new regulation, but we must not lose sight of the big picture. There are more important topics that are important for people in Thuringia, and they should not hang in the shade of flags.
