Deutsche Bahn cancels IC connections: a blow for Thuringia!

The latest announcement from Deutsche Bahn is making the trains breather and causing excitement in Thuringia. From 2026, the company plans to cancel some intercity connections. This was announced at the recently held “Rail Summit” in Jena. The east of Thuringia in particular could be affected by the changes, which could severely affect not only commuters but also travelers MDR reported.

The planned changes include reducing the number of trains on the route from Leipzig via Jena to Karlsruhe. From December 2026, only two trains will run here per direction per day, while there are currently five. In addition, the Intercity from Gera, which runs via Jena, Weimar and Gotha to North Rhine-Westphalia, will be suspended at an unspecified date in 2026. The reason for this is the electrification of the section between Weimar and Gera, which is not scheduled to begin until 2027. The connection between Weimar and Jena will be completely suspended for ten months, which will require replacement buses. The end of the intercity connection from Rostock via Jena to Vienna, which will be completely canceled, also raises particular concerns.

Economic pressure is growing

Prime Minister Mario Voigt (CDU) and Jena's Mayor Thomas Nitzsche (FDP) see the reliability of long-distance connections as crucial for the economic development of the region. During the summit it became clear that both politicians want to build political pressure on Deutsche Bahn and the federal government in order to maintain the rail connections. One reason for the low passenger numbers could be the Deutschlandticket, which caused regional transport services to boom after its introduction, but the intercity trains are hardly used to capacity.

The Deutschlandticket has been valid nationwide since Monday for 49 euros and is particularly popular with commuters and students. In Thuringia in particular, efforts have been made to create a special regulation that allows the use of the Deutschlandticket on the intercity route between Erfurt and Gera via Weimar and Jena. Previously, travelers could also use these connections with local transport tickets, which is no longer necessary. Loud Thuringia24 By the time the ticket was launched, thousands of copies had already been sold, indicating high demand.

Limits and possibilities of the Germany ticket

However, the new regulations that make the Deutschlandticket possible will not apply to all trains to the same extent. Where the ticket is valid and where it is not raises questions that travelers have to ask themselves. Inside Digital points out that the use of the Deutschlandticket on IC and ICE trains is only possible on certain routes. These include the route from Erfurt to Gera as well as other selected connections. However, the ticket remains blocked for many other long-distance trains.

Some routes could maintain commuter flows, while political solutions are required for the rest. The discussion about traveling with the Deutschlandticket on long-distance trains shows how important it is to design transport in the region in line with needs and to prioritize quality over quantity.
