Jena surprisingly fights without three regular players - 1:1 against Aubstadt!

Carl Zeiss Jena played a thrilling friendly against Bayern regional league team Aubstadt in Bedheim last Saturday, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite the high temperatures, the game had some interesting moments. Coach Volkan Uluc was pleased with the ambitious attitude of the Aubstadt team, who took the game very seriously, which was also shown by the final course of the game.

In addition to the external conditions, the team faced the challenge of having to replace three regular players. Nils Butzen, Maurice Hehne and Marcel Hoppe were missing due to the wedding of Ken Gipson, who had his big day on Saturday. “The date had been fixed for months and was discussed within the team,” explained Uluc. Jena was still able to convert this loss of effort into a lead goal with an early penalty from Kevin Lankford in the 19th minute.

But after half-time there was an unexpected turning point. Defense chief Sören Reddemann was injured in the first half when he was accidentally pushed into his own goalkeeper by an Aubstadt player. Uluc hoped it was just a bruise on his groin and hip. The talents who came on after half-time were unable to show what they could do, especially since Aubstadt equalized in the 59th minute through Severo Sturm.

Another critical point of the game was the unconvincing performance of two test players, Elias Oke and Lado Akhalaia. Uluc was rather skeptical: “It probably won’t work.”

While the regional league season is slowly gaining momentum, it remains to be seen how the injury and squad situation at Carl Zeiss Jena will develop. Coach Uluc has to look back on a rich selection and at the same time deal with the challenges that such a situation brings with it. It remains exciting to see how the various young talents will present themselves in the coming games.
