Kitchen inferno in Thuringia: Kloß-Fritz helps affected family!

In Unterrohn, a small town in Thuringia near Bad Salzungen, a tragic kitchen fire has completely turned the life of an elderly couple upside down. On June 15, 2025, Helga (68) and Egon N. (69) wanted to treat themselves to a cozy Sunday with Thuringian dumplings for roasting. But when the dumpling water dripped into the pan with hot fat as it was being drained, a devastating “fat cloud” developed and ignited explosively. According to thueringen24.de, an infernal fire then broke out in the kitchen. A loud bang announced the catastrophe, which could only be ended when the house was demolished.

Despite the couple's courageous efforts to put out the fire themselves, the fire department, with around 20 emergency vehicles and hours of work, remained powerless. In the end, the half-timbered house was completely destroyed and the two had to be taken to hospital because of suspected smoke poisoning. The damage amounts to around 80,000 euros and the criminal police have started investigating the cause of the damage. It is a sad reminder of how quickly misfortune can strike - especially in kitchens, which often become a source of fire due to overheated oils and fats, as the KFV explains.

Help for those affected

The couple is now left without a home or belongings. The son-in-law has already launched a fundraising campaign on “GoFundMe” to help the family during this difficult time. In addition to the urgent financial support, the well-known pop singer Fritz Wagner, better known as “Kloß-Fritz”, has also offered his help. He is planning a charity event under the motto “Dumpling in Concert” and is foregoing his salary in order to support the affected family. As bild.de reports, the Schlagerschloss in Eisfeld will also offer its support by making the area and the restaurant available free of charge.

In this context, the fire brigade has also warned urgently against extinguishing burning fat with water, as this can lead to an explosion. Instead, it is advisable to remove the pot from the heat and cover it with a lid and have a special grease fire extinguisher ready. In Austria, where an average of 562 fires per year caused by overheated oil and grease were registered from 2019 to 2023, this is an urgent warning that should not be ignored in Germany either.

In the meantime, the affected family remains dependent on help. The heartlessness of fate has put them in a dramatic situation, but thanks to the solidarity of the community and the planned charity event, hope for a better future for Helga and Egon N. remains intact.
