Insolvency in Apolda: Thüfleiwa closes after over 100 years!

In the heart of Thuringia, the situation of a traditional company is coming to a head. As Thüringen24 reports, the over 100-year-old Thüfleiwa company in Apolda is closing its production facility and is forced to lay off 58 employees. But what happens to the Thuringian bratwurst, which has been considered a cultural asset and part of Thuringia's identity for centuries? This turns out to be particularly bitter, because bratwurst not only has a long tradition, but also has great importance for the region's culinary landscape.

The traditional company, which operated numerous branches in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, has its problems due to several factors. The increased raw material prices, falling sales figures, the effects of the corona pandemic and technical defects led to insolvency, which was filed for at the end of 2024. However, managing director Mirko Schwendel will play an important role in the new company EWU Thüringer Wurst- und Spezialitäten GmbH. This company takes over the operation and continues production in the Saale-Holzland district. An existing factory is being expanded here for a proud 8 million euros.

A piece of tradition is fighting for its future

The Thuringian bratwurst, which was first mentioned in writing in the 16th century, is much more than just a sausage. This specialty is made from fresh pork, spices and natural casings and is closely linked to the culture of the region. Important spices such as caraway, marjoram and pepper give the sausage its distinctive character. Over the centuries, the bratwurst has become one of the most popular types of sausage in Germany and even became a national dish of Thuringia in the 20th century, as explained on bijlesmatch.

However, the fate of Thüfleiwa's former employees does not seem to be entirely lost. At the new location in Serba you have the opportunity to apply for new positions. General representative Stefan Ettelt sees positive aspects in this development for both the employees and the traditional brand.

What does this mean for regional cuisine?

The closure of Thüfleiwa is not only a bitter blow for the employees, but could also have an impact on the culinary experience in Thuringia. The Thuringian bratwurst in a roll is not just a snack, it is a piece of home that is enjoyed on numerous occasions. Whether at a barbecue or at a folk festival, the combination of sausage, a warm, crispy roll and a good mustard is a fixed ritual for many.

The loss of such a traditional business could mean that less of this regional specialty is served. The region and its residents will be watching developments around Thüfleiwa with interest, while the future of Thuringian bratwurst hangs in the balance.
