Rudolstadt receives new waterworks: Improved quality from August 2025!

The time has come in Rudolstadt: The water supply and wastewater disposal association for cities and municipalities in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district (ZWA Saalfeld-Rudolstadt) recently started operating a modernized waterworks. This exciting development is part of a broader initiative to improve water quality in the region. From August 2025, the local deep well water will be mixed with long-distance water from the Leibis dam in order to be fed into the municipal supply network as mixed water. This will bring the water hardness to a constant level of around 10°dH, which means medium hardness.

The districts of Schwarza, Volkstedt and Rudolstadt-West (Rudolspark) up to the level of the Alte Post are affected by these innovations. The Zeigerheim district of Bad Blankenburg is also one of the areas that will benefit from this change. After all, many people are familiar with the hardness of water because it is caused by calcium and magnesium salts. Switching to medium water hardness should not only improve the taste properties, but also reduce technical wear and tear on household appliances and pipes, thereby extending the service life of these devices.

Background and planning

The modernization was originally scheduled for 2024, but was delayed by just over a year due to a variety of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and material and supply shortages. Despite these serious adversities, the project was successfully completed, with the exception of a few minor remaining tasks. An external test on October 1, 2025 has already confirmed that the water hardness in the distribution system is 10.165°dH.

The change in water hardness is based on current legal requirements that clearly define the hardness ranges. It is divided into soft, medium and hard water qualities, with medium-hard water being ideal for preparing coffee, while soft water develops optimal tea aromas.

World Water Day and insights

On the occasion of the upcoming World Water Day on March 22nd, the ZWA plans to open the facility to interested citizens. Visitors can take an exciting, direct look behind the scenes of the water supply. The exact date will be announced in good time.

For anyone curious, current water analyzes and information about the new water parameters are already available on the ZWA Saalfeld-Rudolstadt website. A clarifying measure for the population that is certainly going in the right direction.

We are excited to see how these developments affect the everyday lives of Rudolstadt residents and are confident that the change to the new water quality will have far-reaching positive effects. Information on water hardness and its influence on use also comes into focus through now-wasser.de, which explains, among other things, how the use of cleaning agents depends on water hardness.
