Saalfeld celebrates bees: children and the beekeepers' association delight in the castle park
The Saalfeld 1903 Beekeeping Association held an exciting event in the Saalfeld Castle Park yesterday with great enthusiasm. As part of this regional event, children from the Marco Polo School, Aquila School and Gertrudis Kindergarten were invited to experience the fascinating life of bees up close. A small but nice program, which initially had to take place in the orangery due to the rainy weather, included not only honey bread but also exciting quiz questions about the world of bees.
Organized by committed members Ralf Kunz, Frank Meister, Siegmar Schönbrodt, Siegfried Karl and Jörg Schrock, there were plenty of opportunities for the little visitors. What was particularly popular was putting on protective suits in order to then collect real honeycombs from the bee colonies under supervision. Mayor Steffen Kania and other representatives of the district and the savings bank board also did not miss this opportunity, and so the event became a special highlight.
Tradition and environmental awareness
The beekeeping association itself looks back on over 120 years of history and, with its more than 80 members and 700 bee colonies under care, is the second largest beekeeping association in Thuringia. This year the association was even awarded the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district's volunteer award for its outstanding achievements in the area of environmental and nature conservation. This goes hand in hand with the presentation of a chronicle of the club, which was presented by Siegfried Karl. Further information can be found on the website of the Saalfeld Beekeeping Association.
But the activities in the Saalfeld area are by no means limited to beekeeping. An active project week was completed at the Neusitz regular school, which ended with a ceremonial distribution of certificates. Students organized a games and sports festival, workshops and even a cake bazaar. The ninth graders took on important tasks and skillfully ensured safety throughout the activities.
Diverse offers for families and those interested in culture
Families will also receive exciting offers in the coming weeks, especially in the fairy grottoes, where family tours, discovery trips in the Grottoneum and numerous other creative events, such as bat nights and alpaca hikes, are available. For further information about dates and offers, interested citizens can contact the relevant authorities.
Rudolstadt is also not neglected culturally. Advance ticket sales for the new 2025/2026 season have already begun, and the grand theater is scheduled to open in September. There will be an open day on September 6th, followed by the official opening on September 7th. Over 800 visitors are expected here and tickets are not required, making the event particularly inviting.
Another important aspect of the local community is the planned self-help group for survivors, which is being initiated by the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt Health Department. The offer aims to support those who are grieving and to provide a platform for exchange.
There is also news about the security situation on the streets of Saalfeld: Gregor Zeh, the new police chief, had his first working meeting with District Administrator Marko Wolfram. The focus of the discussions is on deeper cooperation between the state police inspection and the district office and the implementation of measures to ensure the safety of citizens. Thuringia also plans to increase the number of police candidates from 300 to 360 and extend the training period to three years.
For all those who are interested in local beekeeping or the various events in the region, it is worth taking a look at the platforms of the German Beekeepers Association and the offers on site - the possibilities are diverse and exciting!
