Forest fire in Thuringia: Left calls for immediate measures in the Interior Committee!
At the moment, the focus is on the region around Thuringia after a devastating forest fire broke out near Gösselsdorf in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district. This fire, which started a week ago on Wednesday, has already seen an area of at least 250 hectares in flames, the largest in Thuringia in around 30 years. The situation is tense, but the disaster has now been lifted, as [Zeit.de](https://www.zeit.de/news/2025-07/11/was-geht-besser-linke-moechte-waldbrand-als- committee-thema) reports.
In order to better understand and deal with the situation, the Left parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament has now taken steps to address the forest fire operation in the Interior Committee. Ronald Hande, the internal political group spokesman, emphasizes that the processes must be analyzed carefully in order to clarify questions such as alarming, helicopter requirements and the involvement of the volunteer fire brigades. The aim is to identify material improvement opportunities.
Challenges for the emergency services
Extinguishing the fire is extremely challenging for the emergency services. According to Tagesschau.de, hundreds of firefighters are fighting the flames, while the water supply is difficult in some places. The wind and high temperatures don't make extinguishing work any easier. In addition, the risk of detonating ammunition on the ground is considered worrying.
Around 660 emergency services and 85 vehicles were on duty on Saturday, supported by the federal police, who dropped around 180,000 liters of fire-fighting water on around 100 approaches. Additional specialists from Saxony-Anhalt are expected to fight the vegetation fires. A special feature of this situation: The risk of forest fires in Saxony has reached the highest warning level 5, and rain is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, which could potentially ease the situation.
Forest fires and their significance
Forest fires are not a new phenomenon. Since the 1970s, the relevant data from the federal states have been brought together to create nationwide statistics, which BLE.de makes clear. These statistics include area sizes, causes, and associated spending on prevention and control. This data makes it possible to make forecasts and carry out risk assessments to reduce the number and area size of future wildfires.
The importance of the forest as a protective, useful and recreational area cannot be emphasized enough, especially due to the high population density in Germany. The protection and preservation of forests is therefore very important.
There are also impacts on rail traffic in the nearby area: an embankment fire along the tracks meant that a regional train near Cologne had to be evacuated when around 340 passengers were stuck on the open route for several hours until the fire department freed them.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what lessons will be learned from this dramatic incident. The coming days promise excitement and challenges, both for the emergency services and for politicians.
