SC Magdeburg starts the Champions League with an impressive win against PSG!
Today from Magdeburg: SC Magdeburg opened the new Champions League season with an impressive win against Paris Saint-Germain. The game ended 37:31 after the hosts were already leading 21:17 at halftime. In front of 6,182 enthusiastic spectators, the Magdeburgers showed a strong performance, especially Felix Claar, who was the most accurate weapon in the team and contributed ten goals.
Before the game began, the fans were treated to an emotional moment: the late referee Marcus Helbig was remembered during a minute's silence. This was a thoughtful start to an encounter that nevertheless contained many high moments.
Strong start despite difficulties
The first half was not without challenges. Magdeburg struggled both in defense and attack, but was still able to go into the break with a lead. However, these difficulties did not seem to derail the team. On the contrary, SC Magdeburg found the right answers during an adjustment by the Parisians, who switched to a 5-1 defense in the second half and kept their lead constant. Even with the majority, PSG, contrary to expectations, did not manage to reduce the deficit. Instead, Magdeburg increased its lead to six goals.
In this first stroke of the Champions League, the Magdeburgers already have important further games ahead of them. Next Thursday the team travels to a challenging encounter against FC Barcelona.
EHF Excellence Awards recognize talent
But the evening's topic wasn't just the sporting success on the field. In the run-up to the game, Felix Claar and Magnus Saugstrup were presented with the EHF Excellence Awards. These honors recognize the best players of the past season, with Claar standing out as the best center and Saugstrup as the best defender. The European Handball Federation (EHF) announced the winners of the coveted awards, which were determined based on the votes of players, coaches, fans and journalists.
“It's a great honor to be in this round,” said Claar, who scored 38 goals for Sweden and a total of 85 goals for SC Magdeburg in the Champions League. Saugstrup, who plays for Denmark and was named best defender in the EHF EURO 2024 All-Star team, shows that hard work and talent pay off.
The EHF Excellence Awards, which have taken place annually since 2023 and are now a well-established event in the handball world, bring recognition for the best players and are another reason why handball is so popular with fans. In addition to Claar and Saugstrup, other outstanding players such as Emil Jakobsen and Dika Mem were also honored, who in turn were remembered by the fans and jury for their impressive performances.
With a successful start to the season and awards for their best players, the Magdeburgers show that they are ready to have an important say in this Champions League season.
