Anniversary celebration in Utendorf: 50 years of pedigree rabbit breeding celebrated!

A special occasion is being celebrated in Utendorf this year: the Utendorf pedigree rabbit breeding association is turning 50 years old! The celebrations for this anniversary are planned for the end of August in the village community center. A look at the history of the association shows that the small animal breeders' association in the region has a long tradition that goes back around 100 years. Although precise documents about the age of the original association are missing, the passion for pedigree rabbit breeding is deeply rooted in Utendorf. InSouth Thuringia reports that...

In Germany there are a total of around 160,000 pedigree rabbit breeders who are organized in almost 5,000 clubs. These clubs are not only part of over 500 district associations and 20 state associations, but are also active in numerous craft and creative groups as well as youth groups. The Central Association of German Rabbit Breeders, or ZDRK for short, acts as an important umbrella organization. ZDRK emphasizes that...

Insights into breeding

The breeders in Utendorf are part of an extensive network of breeders who care about improving and preserving the various rabbit breeds. Whether large breeds like the German giants or smaller breeds like dwarf rabbits - the variety is great. A breeder usually has between 20 and 50 rabbits of a certain breed and prepares them conscientiously for exhibitions. This includes grooming and checking the animals’ weight.

But how does it work exactly? Females of all breeds can have young up to three times a year, but usually only breed once or twice. A litter typically has a size of three to ten young, which are born after around 31 days. Young animal management is an important aspect: After birth, the newborns are registered in the club's breeding book and tattooed in order to be able to prove their origin.

Criteria for breeding selection

The evaluation process at exhibitions is also exciting. The animals are judged based on criteria such as body shape, color and weight. To take part in such events, breeders face higher show fees, and the animals must be show-ready - meaning they should be carefully cared for and checked for defects. A breeding group often consists of four animals that either come from one litter or were selected from different litters.

Breeding and keeping rabbits brings not only joy but also responsibility. Breeders must observe animal welfare regulations and carefully plan the feeding of pregnant and lactating rabbits. This dedication and love for the animals is what makes the community of pedigree rabbit breeders in Utendorf and beyond so special.
