There is hardly a place where the anticipation is as palpable as at the forest swimming pool in Rastenberg. Egbert Müller has been on the construction site for four weeks and has his hands full. The outdoor pool will celebrate its 100th anniversary on August 22, 2023, and Mayor Beatrix Winter is determined to stick to the schedule. After all, funding amounting to 2.5 million euros must be implemented quickly in order to complete the renovation work.
The committed mayor, who is a civil engineer herself, regularly checks on the construction site. Your enthusiasm for the project is obvious. “The charm of the Waldbad from 1925, including the foyer and the old changing rooms, should be preserved,” she explains. The comprehensive renovation measures include the complete renovation of the pool and the delivery of a new diving tower, which is expected soon from North Rhine-Westphalia.
Extensive renovation work
But that's not all! Work is going on diligently on the construction site: the foyer and the popular yellow tube slide have already received a fresh coat of paint. A new technical building will also be installed, equipped with three large filter tanks. The last section in the non-swimmer area is still waiting to be completed - but the mayor is optimistic that water will be able to flow into the pools from the end of July.
The demand for the pool to open early is already there: tourists and locals are curious and ask regularly. The restaurant in the bathroom, which has been running since Easter under the new tenant Sandra Lippold, is already enjoying great popularity, despite the ongoing construction work. Invitations to the anniversary and opening celebrations have already been sent out.
Commitment and funding
The extensive renovation work at the outdoor swimming pool in Rastenberg is part of a larger initiative to renovate municipal facilities. The funding and support for such projects was made possible by the federal program “Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture”, for which an impressive 400 million euros will be available in 2023. Particular attention is paid to energy-efficient renovation and the climate-neutral operation of such facilities. “We not only have to renovate the buildings, but also ensure that they meet future standards,” said Klara Geywitz, the Federal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Construction, in a press release.
Rastenberg impressively shows how a new outdoor swimming pool can be created with a mixture of tradition and modernity. Renovation has already begun in other regions, including Hesse. Investments in new multi-purpose pools, special play areas for children and barrier-free design are the focus here - just as is the case in Rastenberg.
It will be exciting to see how the countdown to the big festival on August 22, 2023 continues. One thing is certain: Rastenberg will open a new, fresh chapter in the history of its forest spa on this day. Cheers to the future!
