Raise peace flags in Thuringia: Cities united against nuclear weapons!

A strong signal for peace is being sent in Thuringia today: On July 8, 2025, numerous cities will raise the peace flag on the occasion of the initiative's annual flag day Mayors for Peace. This action not only serves as a symbol against nuclear armament, but also as a call for global disarmament.

The Thuringia regional association of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) is particularly active this year. Janine Bauersachs, spokeswoman for the AG Peace in the BSW, emphasizes the importance of raising the flag and emphasizes that it represents a direct call to politicians to work harder for peace and arms control. In Föritztal, joining the initiative was also suggested, to which Mayor Silke Fischer responded with an open mind.

members of the initiative

The cities of Sonneberg, Neuhaus am Rennweg, Schalkau, Frankenblick and Steinach are actively participating in this global movement. Steinach joined the initiative in 2022 after the city council rejected flying the flag in 2018. Flag Day also commemorates the 1996 ruling of the International Court of Justice, which classified the use and threat of nuclear weapons as contrary to international law. Over 600 cities in Germany and more than 8,000 cities in over 160 countries already support this important initiative, which was founded in 1982 by the then mayor of Hiroshima, Takeshi Araki.

The initiative Mayors for Peace is a global network committed to a world free of nuclear weapons. Numerous cities in Europe are organized to fight together for disarmament and peace. Every year the campaign is accompanied by local events and the raising of peace flags to raise awareness of this important issue.

An appeal for peace

The meaning of raising the peace flag could not be clearer: it is a loud appeal to politicians and society to actively work for a peaceful future. While the world is often characterized by conflict and tension, initiatives like these serve as a reminder that peace is a shared responsibility that can bring many cities and communities together.

By taking part in Flag Day again, Thuringia is not only showing its solidarity with the peace movement, but also its determination to make an active contribution to global disarmament in the future. We can only hope that this message will be heard not only in the cities of Thuringia, but also far beyond.
