Jazzy morning in Sonneberg: Playing Family” sets the mood!
As the days get shorter and the music scene prepares for winter, the International Sonneberg Jazz Days provide a musical ray of hope in the region. On Saturday, November 15, 2025, the renowned Polish jazz and swing formation “Playing Family” will perform at 11 a.m. in the Gesellschaftshaus Sonneberg. The Sonneberger Jazzfreunde association has integrated this event into the “Saturday Morning” series, which is known for combining traditional jazz with high entertainment value. The event promises to be a highlight for all jazz lovers, as entry is free in southern Thuringia reported.
The band “Playing Family” has an impressive history that dates back to 1964. Founded by Janusz Nowotarski in Krakow, the group initially attracted attention with their Dixieland sound. Although the band was quickly disbanded in 1968, it was resurrected the following year with a new line-up. In the decades that followed, Playing Family toured Poland and performed at international festivals. A notable turning point was in 1979, when the band temporarily went under the name “Swing Orchestra Cracow” before returning to their original name.
From generation to generation
After several upheavals, Leszek Nowotarski, the founder's son, took over the musical direction in 2021 and brought a breath of fresh air into the band. The current line-up consists largely of talented graduates of the music academies in Kraków and Katowice, who present a captivating mix of swing and traditional jazz. These musical interludes are enriched by singing, making the performance an all-round experience. “Playing Family” has not only given concerts in Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and France, but also continues to impress on TV stages and has already released two CD productions.
In addition to the concert on Saturday, the band will have another performance on Friday, November 14th, 2025, in Neustadt near Coburg. From 8:00 p.m. the musicians, including Leszek Nowotarski (clarinet, saxophone, direction), Piotr Nowak (trumpet), Robert Szczerba (trombone), Tomasz Bialowieski (piano), Szymon Frankowski (bass) and Michal Peiker (drums), will play in the Lindenhof Ketschenbach. Tickets for this evening are available below jazzmeile.org available.
Optimizations of the space capacity in the small hall are already planned for the event in the Gesellschaftshaus in 2025. These measures aim to take into account the growing demand and popularity of the event. The Sonneberg Jazz Days set a strong example for jazz culture in the region and offer a unique experience for music lovers.
