New benches in the clouds: vandals set new acquisition on fire!

The city of Sonneberg is obviously struggling with an unpleasant situation. After the residential area park in Wolkenrasen was redesigned following the demolition of a retirement home, the freshly installed benches and the new mini playing field have now been vandalized. Six new benches that were installed in mid-May were apparently defaced with paint after just six weeks of use. According to sonneberg.de, the cleaning costs for the benches and the playing field walls amount to around 1,500 euros.

In order to counteract this vandalistic behavior, the city has filed a criminal complaint with the police for damage to property. But that's not all: the city is offering a reward of 500 euros to obtain information that will help catch the perpetrator. The public is asked to report any relevant information to the Sonneberg police on 03675/875-0.

Legal framework for property damage

What exactly does property damage mean? According to stark-im-amt.de, damage to property is regulated in Section 303 of the Criminal Code (StGB). This paragraph covers the destruction, damage and unauthorized alteration of third-party property. This ranges from malicious destruction to damage to changing things that belong to others.

In Germany, a distinction is made between official offenses, which are prosecuted ex officio, and petition offenses, which require the injured party to file a criminal complaint. Since damage to property is considered a criminal offense, such an application must be filed if you want to act as the injured party. The application must be made within three months of the damage becoming known and cannot be submitted anonymously. The applicant's personal information is also required. This is also confirmed by uni-potsdam.de.
