Young people riot in Suhl: stones thrown at windows!
Yesterday evening, October 15, 2025, residents of Rimbachstrasse in Suhl witnessed an unpleasant incident. At around 7:10 p.m., a passerby observed a group of six teenagers, five boys and one girl, throwing stones at the window of an empty building. This reckless action not only caused property damage, but also caused uncertainty in the neighborhood.
The witness saw the young people fleeing towards the cemetery after the crime. The police immediately began investigations and are now looking for additional witnesses who can provide information about the incident. Anyone interested is asked to contact the Thuringian police on (03681) 3690. Questions can also be directed to the press office of the Suhl State Police Inspectorate on (03681) 32 1503 or via email to pressestelle.lpi.suhl@polizei.thueringen.de.
The context of juvenile crime
The events in Suhl do not take away from a current discussion about the increase in youth crime in Germany. According to Statista, youth violence reached a worrying peak in 2024 with around 13,800 registered cases, which is more than twice as high as in 2016. The increase is particularly noticeable among young people between the ages of 14 and 17 and among adolescents between the ages of 18 and 20, which last reached similar levels in 2011.
The reasons for this development are diverse. Experts from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) blame, among other things, psychological stress caused by the Corona measures and special risk factors among young people seeking protection. In addition, crime among young people in Germany remains predominantly a male phenomenon: in 2024, almost three quarters of the suspects were male. Research identifies hormonal circumstances, trained behavior and social role models as possible factors for the higher crime rates among boys.
Social responsibility and prevention
The worrying situation opens up space for debate about possible measures that should be taken. While some voices advocate tougher sanctions in juvenile criminal law, others emphasize the focus on preventative measures such as strengthening child and youth welfare services in order to prevent criminals from developing at an early stage.
The incidents on Rimbachstrasse show how important it is for the community to work together to guide young people in positive directions and protect them from the dangers of crime. The police and youth welfare institutions are called upon to support young people and show them alternative perspectives.
