Truck accident on A73: tire burst causes closure for hours!
A spectacular traffic accident occurred today on the A 73 in the direction of Feucht, between the Hafen-Süd junction and the Münchener Str junction. A 63-year-old driver from Swabia lost control of his truck with a trailer after the left front tire burst. The truck, loaded with around 20 tons of animal feed pellets, left the road, hit the concrete barrier and overturned. Luckily there were no injuries, but the incident caused significant property damage estimated at 59,000 euros.
The truck's load was distributed across the left lane of the Feucht direction and all lanes of the Suhl direction. Parts of the affected vehicle were thrown into the oncoming lane and damaged two cars there. Numerous emergency services were on site to clear the scene of the accident, including the Nuremberg professional fire department and the Wendelstein and Worzeldorf volunteer fire departments. The highway maintenance department and the technical relief organization also supported. Due to the clean-up work, both lanes remained closed for several hours before the Suhl direction was reopened after around eight hours. The Feucht direction of travel was reopened around 4:00 a.m.
Tire bursts as a source of danger
Tire blowouts, like the one in this case, can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious problems on the highway. The pressure that truck and bus tires are exposed to significantly increases the risk of such an incident. If a tire bursts, the consequences can be devastating: accidents, long delays and unpleasant waiting times are often the result. Truck driver Tinka reports an example of this from her own experience. Her tire burst about seven years ago on a route from Kassel to Dortmund, where she had no chance to avoid it and crashed into a flatbed truck that had lost a piece of scaffolding on the road.
Tire bursts can have fatal consequences, especially on motorways, where space is often limited and there are few alternative options. A ruling by the Arnstadt district court from 2015 illustrates the legal implications of such incidents. Here it was decided that both the truck driver and the owner were jointly and severally liable for the parts of the tire that remained on the highway. The court also found that drivers who encounter a tire residue at high speed in the dark are often unable to take evasive action in time, which leads to accidents.
These events and judgments make it clear how important it is to keep the safety of truck tires in mind. Tire maintenance and inspection should be a top priority for every driver to avoid such dangerous situations. After all, it's not just a question of your own safety, but also that of other road users.
