Luxury yacht Bayesian recovered: tragedy after storm with seven dead!
While the return of the luxury yacht “Bayesian” to the surface is a triumphant moment, it is also a cause for sadness and concern. Ten months after the dramatic sinking off the coast of Sicily, the wreck has now been recovered. The Italian coast guard took on the coordinating role to raise the ship from a depth of around 50 meters near the port town of Porticello. The technical effort was enormous, which was also reflected in the multiple delays caused, among other things, by the tragic loss of a Dutch diver during the preparations.
The Bayesian, which was known as a luxury sailing yacht, sank on August 18, 2024 during a violent storm. In addition to the British billionaire Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, two couples who were friends and the ship's cook died in this disaster. Only 15 people survived, including Lynch's wife. A report by the British expert showed that the yacht was not designed for wind speeds of up to 130 km/h, which had fatal consequences. The disaster was classified by local weather services as an extreme event involving a supercell weather pattern that produced sudden, damaging winds of more than 87 knots.
Complex recovery
The recovery of the “Bayesian” turned out to be technically extremely demanding. The 72 meter high mast has already been separated to ensure stability during lifting. Straps have been used to secure the hull and the wreck will now be drained and stabilized before being towed to Termini Imerese. Environmental concerns are also a focus: around 18,000 liters of fuel are in the wreck, and drones with infrared sensors and patrol boats are monitoring the area for possible dangers.
The Italian public prosecutor's office is currently on site and is intensively investigating the circumstances of the accident. Investigations are underway against the New Zealand captain and two of his crew members for alleged dereliction of duty. They are accused of ignoring storm warnings and putting passengers in danger. It is currently unclear whether there will be a trial, but the hope for clarification remains.
Sad memories
The tragedy of the sinking and the associated losses cast a long shadow over the yacht and its history. Before the accident, the “Bayesian” was often admired by ocean sailing enthusiasts. The salvage could now provide important clues about the true causes of the sinking in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the yacht is towed to Tenorm Imerese, the question remains what lessons can be learned from this tragedy.
It remains to be hoped that the investigations and reports on the “Bayesian” not only shed light on the matter, but also help to prevent such accidents in the future. However, another chapter in the history of seafaring has undoubtedly opened.
