Murder investigation in Thuringia: pensioner found dead in the basement!
A tragic incident is causing shock in Thuringia: A 78-year-old senior woman was found lifeless in an apartment building in Brotterode-Trusetal. The police assume it was a homicide and have already called in the murder commission of the Thuringia State Criminal Police Office to investigate. Julia Kohl, spokeswoman for the Suhl State Police Inspectorate, confirmed that the circumstances of the death are now the focus of the investigation. The senior citizen was discovered in the communal cellar on Siedlerstrasse, as Bild.de reports. What is striking is that no suspects have been arrested to date. Jochen Grundler, spokesman for the Meiningen public prosecutor's office, announced that proceedings against unknown persons are ongoing.
This frightening discovery does not come at a quiet time, as crime has become a sensitive issue in many parts of Germany. As can be read on Statista, the Federal Criminal Police Office's police crime statistics recorded a 1.7% decrease in crimes to around 5.84 million in 2024, but many people's sense of security continues to be impaired. Crimes against life in particular only account for 0.1% of cases, but the impression remains that the risk of becoming a victim of violent crimes is higher in some large German cities.
Another serious crime
To underline the explosiveness of the crime issue, another worrying incident became known in Sigmaringen. The Sigmaringen Criminal Police Office is investigating a 27-year-old resident of an assisted living facility for attempted homicide. The suspect is said to have choked an employee of the facility with a judo belt on Thursday morning. Fortunately, the woman was able to prevent something worse by fighting back and called for help, so that other employees stopped the attack and held the man until the police arrived, reports Wochenblatt.
The employee sustained minor injuries in the incident, while the 27-year-old was brought before a judge on Friday afternoon at the request of the Hechingen public prosecutor. Due to his psychological state of emergency, the judge ordered him to be placed in a psychiatric hospital. This case shows how important it is to look not only at the statistics, but also at the people behind the numbers.
Overall, it is clear that the development of crime in Germany and especially in the affected regions continues to be a sensitive issue. Regardless of the overall declines, there are individual cases that increase the feeling of fear and insecurity among the population. The investigations into the deceased senior citizen in Thuringia and the threat in Sigmaringen are clear evidence that society should remain vigilant.
