Police on duty: Focus on one-eyed people during nighttime checks!
In Zella-Mehlis, law enforcement officers went on an important mission on Tuesday evening: increasing traffic safety. The police, led by Tizian Lachmuth and Emely Hiller, carried out targeted checks, particularly focusing on vehicles with defective lighting. In particular, the so-called “one-eyed cars” – cars with only one working headlight – should be examined more closely. This measure came at just the right time because the poor weather conditions with heavy rain and darkness made the roads particularly dangerous. Fortunately, the police officers reported positive feedback, especially from older drivers, who were often happy to be checked for the first time and could thus be made aware of their road safety. This was documented in detail by insuedthueringen.de.
But while some police officers actively contributed to security on the streets that evening, a 23-year-old driver in Suhl caused a voracious state of emergency. The man, who “forgot” to brake during a traffic stop, fled recklessly in the direction of Ilmenau. He ignored the police's stop signals and continued his reckless drive, even after a stop stick in Manebach partially slashed his tires. The driver didn't give up and continued racing with the remaining rims until he was finally discovered - thanks to a helicopter that was able to locate him on knebelstrasse in Ilmenau. There was also a drunk 47-year-old passenger in the vehicle and during a subsequent check the officers discovered two prohibited one-hand knives. Several proceedings were immediately initiated for the reckless driver, including for driving without a license and endangering traffic, reported mdr.de.
Statistics and future developments
Efforts to increase road safety could be supported by new statistical developments. From 2024, the Federal Highway Research Institute is planning a fundamental revision of the traffic control service's control results. A distinction is made between sensory and manual traffic controls, which should enable an improved presentation of the results. This new approach includes state-of-the-art technical innovations and will make it possible to create detailed time series. The distinction between non-resident and resident registration of vehicles will also be taken into account in the new statistics, as balm.bund.de shows.
The current developments relating to road safety are of great importance for both the police and drivers. Collaboration between the authorities and the population will become even more important in the future. And perhaps such measures can help make the streets in and around Zella-Mehlis safer.
