Suhl celebrates reopening: Open day at the blood donation institute!
On June 29, 2025 the time had come: The Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Suhl (ITMS) opened its doors to interested parties again after almost six years. Visitors were able to find out about the important topic of blood donation and admire the institute's new infrastructure. The last open day took place on August 25, 2019, but could not be repeated for a long time due to the corona pandemic insuedthueringen.de reported.
As part of the event, tours of the institute and the new extension building, which has been functional since the end of May 2025, were offered. Visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the need for blood donations and to take action. "Donate blood! Save lives!" was the clear motto of the day in order to motivate the population to take part in blood donations treffpt.de highlights.
Call for donations and campaigns
In the summer months there is traditionally a decline in the willingness to donate, due to vacation time and holidays. To counteract this, the Suhl blood donation service has launched interesting campaigns. Among other things, an online challenge for companies was introduced, and the active recruitment of millennials and other generations through entertaining social media advertising should also help to increase the number of donors.
A highlight of the day were the various offers for visitors. This included food vouchers for barbecue, drinks, cake and ice cream as well as face painting for the little ones. Those interested could register for tours at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The introduction of a blood donation app for booking appointments is also planned for this year to make it easier for Thursday friends to organize their visit.
Importance of blood donation
The need for blood donations is undisputed: around 350 units of blood are needed every day in Thuringia, and up to three lives can be saved per unit. Blood products are vital for various medical emergencies. Statistically speaking, every second German citizen will need blood or blood products at some point in their life. For this reason, regular donations are essential because blood reserves have a shelf life of up to seven weeks, while blood plasma is even used to produce medicines for life-threatening diseases. Important components such as fibrinogen and albumin play a central role in surgery and the treatment of burns.
The requirements for donations are clear: adults aged 18 and over without relevant previous illnesses can take part. Women are allowed to donate whole blood four times a year and men six times a year, with at least eight weeks between donations. For the donation, blood pressure, pulse and temperature are measured before each visit, along with health questions. A valid ID card or passport is also required.
For further information and details about planned events and blood donation dates, the institute's website is available: www.blutspendesuhl.de.
The initiative of blood donation is not only important for the individual but for the entire community. It is in our hands to save lives and provide help, and the open day in Suhl impressively showed how committed and lively the topic of blood donation is being promoted here.
