Club whispers: Tips on insurance and liability for southern Thuringian clubs
On June 15, 2025, the third “Club Whisper” of the Municipal Working Group Oberzentrum Südthüringen (KAG) took place in Schleusingen. At this well-attended event, 35 representatives from 27 different clubs met to discuss necessary insurance, what to do in the event of damage and liability issues. Mayor Alexander Brodführer welcomed the participants and set an example for the important dialogue between the clubs.
The topics were wide-ranging and revolved around the various aspects of insurance coverage. Frank Oliver Käthner from Impuls AG gave a specialist insight into the insurance that is essential for clubs. It became clear that there is no blanket solution for any club; everyone has to weigh up individual risks. Important types of insurance were particularly highlighted, including property insurance such as buildings and contents, as well as liability policies. Fidelity insurance also played a role.
Liability issues in focus
A central topic of the evening was the liability of board members. It was emphasized that board members must act with the care of a prudent businessman, as they are generally liable with their private assets. This makes it all the more important to be well informed and to take out the right insurance to protect yourself. According to deutsches-ehrenamt.de, clubs should definitely have club liability insurance. This covers personal injury and property damage to third parties as well as resulting financial losses.
Organizer liability insurance is also recommended, as it specifically covers damage during events. This could become relevant, for example, if a visitor gets injured at a summer festival. Another important component is financial loss liability, also known as D&O insurance, which covers the financial risks of the association's legal representatives.
Diverse insurance options
Overall, the event encouraged participants to think intensively about the topic of insurance. The protection letter from deutschen-ehrenamts.de offers various modules that are individually tailored to the needs of different types of clubs, from sports to cultural clubs. Optional insurance such as accident insurance and inventory insurance were also mentioned.
The positive feedback from the participants speaks for itself: Many were enthusiastic about the opportunity to take suggestions for their own clubs and strengthen the network. The next “Club Whisper” is already planned for November 4th in Oberhof, with the KAG continuing to pursue the goal of increasing the quality of life in the cities of Oberhof, Schleusingen, Suhl and Zella-Mehlis and promoting club life.
